Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
SAVAGE AVENGERS #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Conan The Barbarian officially becomes an Avenger! I don’t know about you, but that’s just the kind of crazy-ass shit that I read comic books for. Now begone and let me read this comic.(Kris)
BONE PARISH TP VOL 01 $14.99 (Boom!) – Regular readers of this website will know that this book was one of my favourites last year. And with good reason. The perfect blend of crime and horror, this book is like an HBO show in your hands. There’s a new drug on the streets of New Orleans called Ash. This drug is made from the bones of the dead and will let you relive moments of their lives. Ash is one helluva drug. It’s also worth a lot of money, so crime families are waging war over it. If you missed it when it started, now’s the time to jump on. Just one hit and you’ll be hooked. (Andrew)
DCEASED #1 (OF 6) $3.99 (DC Comics) – A techno-virus is unleashed on the denizens of the DCU, turning nearly the entire populace into psychotic, violent, relentless abominations. They’re zombies! I don’t know if DC is outright calling them zombies, but this is DC Zombies, alright? And the DC heroes have gotta stop them. Now normally, I’d say I’m pretty zombied out these days and move on. But the creative team on this book is kinda bonkers. Tom Taylor is writing while Trevor Hairsine and Stefano Guadiano handle art. Like I said: bonkers! (Kris)
GOGOR #1 $3.99 (Image) – Looking for some high fantasy? And when I say high, I’m talking really high. Up-In-The-Clouds high. Gogor is a sleeping giant that lives beneath the earth of the floating islands of Altara. While he sleeps, a bunch of assholes have taken over the land above and have made the peoples’ lives super shitty. A young buck named Armano is trying the make things right and he’ll need Gogor to do it. It’s time to wake the sleeping giant, kid. Good luck with that. (Andrew)
WAR OF THE REALMS #3 (OF 6) $4.99 (Marvel) – I’m really digging War of the Realms thus far. It feels less like a big, stupid, unwieldy cash-grab of an event book and more like the logical continuation of the really great Thor story that Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman have been telling for years. It’s a beautiful book, it’s tons of fun, and there’s still lots of story left. So pick this bad boy up and find out just how the remaining heroes of Midgard plan on striking back against the forces of Malekith after they just watched Loki get straight up eaten by his dad. (Kris)
GREEN LANTERN #7 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Hal Jordan just can’t catch a break, can he? He just saved the freakin’ world from destruction, sacrificing himself in the process. But he’s not dead. He’s trapped inside his power ring, which houses a whole universe inside it. This universe will cease to exist if the ring loses all its energy. So now Hal has to find a way to save another goddamn universe! It never ends for this guy. Guess that’s why they pay him the big bucks. Wait…they don’t pay him? (Andrew)
DEAD MAN LOGAN #7 (OF 12) $3.99 (Marvel) – Old Man Logan is nearing the end of the line and thus has returned to the Wasteland to watch the lights dim in the place that it all began. But this isn’t the Wasteland he left behind. New players have seized power and things are looking more grim than ever. If only there was some sort of heroic killing machine with nothing left to lose kicking around that could set things right. Oh. Wait.(Kris)
BEASTS OF BURDEN: PRESENCE OF OTHERS #1 (OF 2) $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Don’t go poking around Burden Hill. That’s what I always say. People look at me strangely when I do, ’cause they have no idea what I’m talking about. But it’s good advice all the same. I wish somebody would’ve told these two pesky paranormal investigators. They’re messing with the graveyard where “The Master” sleeps. (Lee Van Cleef sleeps there?) Now it’s up to the animals to fix things. If people just listened to me, they wouldn’t be in this mess. (Andrew)
DESCENDENT #1 $3.99 (Aftershock) – The kidnapping of a US Senator’s son leads an unlikely group of heroes down a rabbit hole of conspiracy, ancient secrets, and an alternate American history. Sounds like a light Saturday morning read to me. (Kris)
GI JOE, A REAL AMERICAN HERO: SILENT OPTION TP $17.99 (IDW) – Hey kids, do you like the G.I. Joe? Well, good ol’ Larry Hama has been bringing you Joe stories for most of his career. Here’s another one that incorporates Agent Helix into the Real American Hero universe. Helix is probably the best thing to come out of the new IDW-made characters. Now’s her time to shine in the OG Joe comic timeline. If you’ve never even heard of Helix, you should pick up this trade and find out just how awesome she is. Go do that now. Right now. Camp out at your comic shop. Do it. I’m not joking. Why are you still here…….okay good, you’re gone……No wait, I see you hiding behind that bookshelf. Go on! Get outta here! Go get that book. (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
