Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
NAOMI #5 $3.99 (DC Comics) – This comic has been an absolute joy since page 1 of the very first issue. The scripts by Walker and Bendis have been sharp and fun and real. The digital artwork supplied by Jamal Campbell is nothing short of spectacular. This issue, all of Naomi’s secrets get laid on the table. Who she is. Where she’s from. Why a bunch of space assholes killed her mom. Y’know? The standards. (Kris)
INVASION 1984 TP $19.99 (Rebellion / 2000AD) – Skeletal aliens invade the Earth and attack London in the British version of War of the Worlds. This has never been printed as a stand alone story before. It was previously in Battle Picture Weekly, a newsstand magazine, back in the day and inspired an entire generation of British creators. Just look at the cover at the bottom of the page and tell me you don’t want to read it. Of course you want to read it! It looks awesome! (Andrew)
LAST STOP ON RED LINE #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Someone has been strangled on a Boston subway car and the investigating detective has no workable leads. Now you may think to yourself that stranglings must happen daily on Boston subway cars. While that may be true, how many of them have some sort of a supernatural bent to them? Oh? A lot, you say? Possibly the majority? Well… shit. This comic is about one of ‘em. Read it. (Kris)
SABRINA TEENAGE WITCH #2 (OF 5) $3.99 (Archie) – Hey kids, looking for a Sabrina that’s less about chilling adventures and satanic hi-jinks? This is the book for you. Sabrina’s trying to live that simple life at Greendale High. But things don’t always go according to plan. She’s gotta solve a supernatural mystery, keep her witch powers a secret, and still get good grades and whatnot. Sounds like a pretty full plate you got there, kid. Let’s see how long you can keep it spinning. (Andrew)
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #5 $3.99 (Marvel) – Star-Lord may be dead and Hela, Goddess of death, is looking to un-dead Thanos. Un-dead, not undead. Like she’s gonna de-dead him. Bring him back to life and whatnot. Anyway you slice it, it ain’t a good deal for the universe and one Peter Quill in particular. (Kris)
PEARL #9 $3.99 (Jinxworld) – If you’ve just joined us, Pearl Tanaka is a master tatoo artist and assassin who ended up hooking up with a guy she was suppose to kill and now things are weird for her and the Yakuza. A tale older than time, amirite? Anyways, now she’s on a fact finding mission about her family in a seldom seen side of Tokyo. I’m guessing this won’t just be a trip of catching up and learning. Pretty sure there will be blood at some point….and I’m not talking about that Daniel Day Lewis film. (That is unless Pearl decides to watch that film to unwind. Then maybe it will be in there as well.) (Andrew)
LITTLE BIRD #3 (OF 5) $3.99 (Image) – A seemingly un-killable old person and a seemingly un-killable young person set out to kill an omnipresent, fascist regime comprised entirely by terrible people who are (hopefully) absolutely killable. Also, the story takes place primarily in Canada. Which earns extra points. (Kris)
DAREDEVIL #5 $3.99 (Marvel) – It’s the finale of Chip Zdarsky’s first arc on the book without fear! Daredevil has been accused of murder and has been on the run. But you can’t run forever! That’s been proven by science! So does that mean judgement day is coming for Matt Murdock? Sure, why not? (Andrew)
WAR OF THE REALMS #4 (OF 6) $4.99 (Marvel) – The tide of the War of Realms may be turning as All-Mother Freyja has wrenched control of the Black Bifrost from Malekith’s clutches. Now all she has to do is hold the damn thing until reinforcements can arrive. Which, to be fair, is a lot easier to do when you have a Hulk, the Daywalker, a Spirit of Vengeance, and the goddamn Punisher backing you up. I predict much fire and blood. Should be a good’un. (Kris)
MISTER MIRACLE HC $34.99 (DC Comics) – Here it is! The collected edition of one of the best comics from the past two years! It made my list for both 2017 and 2018. Now’s it’s all together in one handy, dandy hardcover for you to enjoy. I know, Mister Miracle has never been an A-Lister. The Fourth World has always featured epic saga that the average joe can’t quite relate to. This series takes all that and adds in a human element that’s been missing all this time. Miracle and Big Barda are just like you and me….except for being New Gods, that is. Other than that, Miracle puts his pants on one leg at a time. Then he puts a mask on and does crazy stunts………I think I lost the point again. Just check it out and you’ll get it. (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
