Hey not sure what to watch this week on the small screen? No worries #SetTheVCR is here to help you make some of those decisions easier. Each week Sammy Younan and I will give you our picks for each day of the coming week. Please note – enjoyment NOT guaranteed.
All times are Eastern Standard Time so please adjust for your time zone.
It’s a week of finales for many shows on the small screen. Now the true test of this blog will take place as we hit the long, long days and nights of summer. Don’t worry we will find something for you to watch.
Years ago I talked to Cake (the band… not the food) about their passion for irony. This week things as they are wont to do in life have gone full circle and we offer you cake (the food) and irony.Sammy Younan

What’s My Name (
Arrow (9pm / CW) – FINALE! I lost track of this show after Oliver’s son was introduced as a reoccuring character. However, now that it is about to enter its final season I think I’ll jump back in and get caught up over the summer. It currently is still the best live-action Batman on television. While I didn’t always agree with the decisions the showrunners made on this show it certainly tried to explore areas not done in the comics. (Mr. Green)

We Gon’ Be Alright (Indie Lens Storycast – Youtube) – One of the smartest human beings I’ve ever hung out with Jeff Chang (and a strong Warriors fan!) published in 2016 We Gon’ Be Alright: Notes on Race and Resegregation. This was sparked by his response to what was happening in Ferguson. That book and lotta of Jeff’s astonishing ideas have been adapted into a four-episode docuseries for Indie Lens Storycast. This is Must See TV. I can’t wait for this. (Sammy)
The Flash (8pm / CW) – FINALE! I was excited for this season when it was announced due to another year of a non-speedster villain. However, that has come under severe scrutiny as Nora AND Eobard are major parts of this season. I really hope they actually take the plunge and do more non-speedsters next year. Flash has a huge rogues gallery that does not include speedsters for him to fight. Plus after they introduced Mirror Masters gun this year I have my fingers crossed they bring Evan McCulloch into the show. They didn’t do much on here with Sam Scudder so here’s a chance at a fresh reboot in continuity and have another classic Flash rogue appear. Fingers-crossed. (Mr. Green)

NBA Playoffs (
Overwatch League (9pm / ESPN) – Atlantic and Pacific all-stars compete against each other in a series of custom games to determine which division is best. While I don’t play Overwatch myself there’s no denying its popularity with fans around the world. The competition is sure to heated as they battle for supremacy. (Mr. Green)

Rain: Season 2 (Tomorrow / Netflix) – A #SetTheVCR Heads Up! Tomorrow Season 2 of Netflix’s Danish post-apocalyptic tv show (now that’s a genre!) drops: Rain! A virus in the rain has wiped out almost all the humans in Scandinavia…lotta the same themes and ideas as Walking Dead and other
post-apocalyptic thrillers: trust no one; stranger danger, torture, unlocking the mysteries of this mysterious virus so this stuff is always fun! (Sammy)
Big Bang Theory (8pm / CBS) – FINALE! The end of an era on CBS tonight as Big Bang comes to end after twelve seasons. I gave up on the show after the fifth season as I stopped laughing at it. It just wasn’t working for me personally however the wife kept on it and had actually decided to quit the show but they announced it was ending she was like well I’ve com this far. Hard to argue that logic. So here we are at the end with all but one of the original characters married and a Noble Prize on the line for Sheldon. Tune in to see how it all finishes up for these characters. (Mr. Green)

Nailed It! (3am / Netflix) – Hosted by Nicole Byer and Jacques Torres, home bakers with a terrible track record take a shot at re-creating edible masterpieces for a $10,000 prize. It’s part competition, part hot mess. This is so true of the show and its terrible bakers in each episode. Candice got me watching it after she had started bingeing it one night. Nicole is absolutely hilarious on this show and Chef Torres works perfectly off of her eccentric character. Can’t wait to watch this over the weekend. (Mr. Green)
Saturday, May 18
NBA Playoffs (
NHL Playoffs (7pm / NBC) – Enjoy all the hockey while we still can. Soon the playoffs will be over and all that will be left is the NBA Playoffs (which makes Sammy happy!) and baseball. Ugh. Oh well, it’s better than a kick in the teeth on a Saturday night trust me. (Mr. Green)
Sunday, May 19
Nothing! – Sigh… let’s get this whole Game of Thrones thing outta the way so we can begin waiting for HBO’s Watchmen and see if that’s any good. On to the next one for HBO and tv viewers everywhere! (Sammy)
Game of Thrones (9pm / HBO) – FINALE! This. Is. It. After eight seasons we now come to the end of the Song of Fire & Ice saga in the series finale of Game of Thrones. Honestly, after this, I’m not sure at all what to write about on Sundays going forward as the last six weeks was easy to write about. However here we will see what happens to Westeros going forward and know who will actually sit on the Iron Throne. Or could my theory come true with no one taking the Throne but instead have the seven kingdoms be ruled by their own monarchs and work together in a ruling council of the realm. Probably not but hey who knows anymore. I’m sure there will be years of debate over this ending and the series as a whole. (Mr. Green)
Well, there you go plenty of options for the week ahead. Enjoy yourself and watch responsibly.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
