Hey not sure what to watch this week on the small screen? No worries #SetTheVCR is here to help you make some of those decisions easier. Each week Sammy Younan and I will give you our picks for each day of the coming week. Please note – enjoyment NOT guaranteed.

All times are Eastern Standard Time so please adjust for your time zone.

Look I never accepted the narrative this is a golden era of television. Doing this column means there are a lot (like a lot!) of times when I hafta admit nothing is going on. The networks made nothing for us or if they did they failed to spread it around. So rather than admit this time I got nothing I’m being generous and giving you a #SetTheVCR Heads Up. It’s What We Do.

Monday, May 6

Chernobyl (9pm / HBO) – This trailer has those “nuclear sounds” or that music… maybe it’s that mix I dunno what it is, but it’s so unsettling (night terrors). That’s what I find scary; the incident less so. The marketing has been terrible on HBO’s part since Chernobyl happened on April 26, 1986, but I guess Game of Thrones or something was in the way? Well, I sat through Chernobyl Diaries (yes, I know) so this is like facts and such so I’m in! (Sammy)

Shadowhunters (8pm / Freeform)SERIES FINALE! This is the end of the road for this series and it’s an extended episode to boot. Even if you don’t get Freeform where you live no worries it comes to Netflix the following day. Spun out of the movie developing a very loyal audience over its 3 seasons it’s a story of the fight for the survival of the world. In this episode, we are going to have epic battles and a wedding. The stakes were always going to high when you mix angels, demons and humans together with other magical entities. (Mr. Green)

Tuesday, May 7

Wine Country (Friday! / Netflix) – There’s a whole lotta nothing going on today but there’s so much on Friday that I’m giving you a #SetTheVCR Heads Up now. On Friday on Netflix you can watch Wine Country: a new comedy directed by Amy Poehler and co-starring Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer and Tina Fey. Fun right? But that’s on Friday. Today? (Sammy)

WWE Smackdown Live! (8pm / USA) – Unlike Sammy, I’m not skipping over what’s on the night to look to Friday. You gotta have faith sometimes. Hopefully, now that the main Money in the Bank matches are set we can start to get back to what made this brand fun to watch. The last few weeks since Mania have been a little lacklustre, to say the least. I’m hoping the stars like Becky and Kofi can rise above the shitty writing coming from the back and still entertain us. (Mr. Green)

Wednesday, May 8

The Society (Friday! / Netflix) – Another #SetTheVCR Heads Up! Ok sure you can watch Lucifer on Netflix today but on Friday don’t you wanna check out: The Society: Season 1 on Netflix. Which sounds like Children of The Corn for millennials! “Teens in a small New England town wake up one day without parents, teachers or any adult supervision whatsoever.” Actually, Children of The Corn meets Home Alone…yeah. Still, that’s Friday on Netflix. Otherwise for today…I dunno see what Mr. Green hasta say. He’ll probably do the right thing and like actually recommend this show on Friday like you’re supposed to. (Sammy)

Lucifer (3am / Netflix)PREMIERE! While Sammy continues to say there is nothing on this week I’m looking at a packed night. There are six network show finales including The Goldbergs. However, it does mark the return for a little show that could, in Lucifer. After FOX cancelled the series at the end of last season, Netflix picked it up and hopefully will go a little closer to the edge than FOX would allow. While not much like his comic origins the show has transformed into a kind of shlocky fun soap opera of the ’80s. See Sammy whether you like Lucifer or The Goldbergs or any of the others there are still plenty of other options tonight. No need to wait until Friday. (Mr. Green)

Thursday, May 9

NBA Playoffs (TBD / TBD) – The 2019 NBA Playoffs continue to unfold with some surprises, some anger, new narratives and old feelings. Thursday could potentially see a Raptors vs 76ers game; maybe Trail Blazers and Nuggets. Let’s see how this week unfolds. There are games on every night…real men doing real things…epic hard-fought battles. And Game of Thrones is one what once a week? Please. You want ruckus daily? Here ya go! (Sammy)

Premier League Darts (10:25 / BBC America) – Sure Sammy finally found something to watch on TV tonight but he went with the safe pick in the rigged NBA. What?! Did you think my previous Cornhole Championships was a fluke? I like weird sports and I cannot lie. Plus I find darts both soothing and hilarious all at the same time. Not much makes me happier than hearing the announcer say “One Hundred and Eighhhhhhhhhhty” it’s the best. It’s right there with “Hurry Harrrrrd!” (Mr. Green)

Friday, May 10

Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men (9pm / Showtime) – The four-part docu-series Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men gives fist bumps to one of the greatest hip-hop collectives of all time! It’s Wu-Tang. (Sammy)

The Society (3am / Netflix) – Some Lord of the Flies action going down in this new series from Netflix. Teenagers in a small New England town are transported to an exact copy of their town but without any of their parents. So of course cliques and mischief abounds in the series. I’m sure they will have some kind of Piggy moment as well to tie it all back to its inspiration. (Mr. Green)

Saturday, May 11

My Dad Wrote A Porno (10pm / HBO) – This is billed as a comedy special but it’s from a podcast so these categories are not so clean anymore. HBO did this before with Pod Save America and that was mixed results. It’s fascinating though that HBO is actively mining podcasts for productions. We’ve gone full circle where early tv was just radio hosts and radio comedies adapted for the new medium. (Sammy)

NHL Playoffs (TBD / Various) – As usual not much on a Saturday that is new and fresh and fun to watch. Especially since Sammy picked the one thing that looked interesting. However, luckily there is still NHL hockey happening. Always a safe back up, well until the Cup is decided. At that point, I will have some hard choices to make. (Mr. Green)

Sunday, May 12

Barry (10pm / HBO) – Barry got renewed for Season 3! That’s amazing…I didn’t think that would happen. And if you’re asking…who is Barry? Well, then wouldn’t it make sense to tune in and find out for yo’self? (Sammy)

Game of Thrones (9pm / HBO) – This one is going to be another huge battle episode as the Battle for King’s Landing takes place. I’m also expecting a slightly extended episode here as well like with The Long Night episode. Thankfully we shouldn’t be hearing any more yapping about how dark it is during battle. Full sunny daylight should be on the docket this week. Plus all the other deaths many were expecting will happen. Then on to the finale next week. I’m still predicting no King or Queen in the end, Jon destroys the Throne and moves back beyond the wall and disappears. He’s done enough at this point. (Mr. Green)

Well, there you go plenty of options for the week ahead. Enjoy yourself and watch responsibly.

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
