Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
DEAD MAN LOGAN #8 (OF 12) $3.99 (Marvel) – Old, grizzled, one-eyed Wolvie is back on his own world and contending with a whole mess of post-apocalyptic a-holes that want him whole bunches of dead. Oh, and remember the Hulk baby that Logan left alive at the end of the original Old Man Logan? Those aforementioned a-holes also wanna kill that baby. That’s pretty fucked up. Logan agrees. Much stabbing is forthcoming. (Kris)
CRIMINAL #5 $3.99 (Image) – A brand new story arc kicks off in the latest issue of Criminal! A private detective comes to town looking for a dangerous woman. Who hasn’t been there before. Looking for a dangerous woman is the number one reason why I leave the house everyday! Thus begins The Summer of ’88. It’s a lot like the Summer of ’69 but with less Bryan Adams and a lot more blood probably. Jump on this title and check it out! (Andrew)
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY ANNUAL #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – For months we’ve been wondering just what the hell happened to all those cosmic heroes that got sucked into the Black Order’s black hole bomb back in GOTG #1. With this annual we’re finally gonna find out straight from the dog’s mouth. Literally. Yes, this book will be told from the perspective of Cosmo the Spacedog. Yes, you will be buying this comic. (Kris)
THUMBS #1 (OF 5) $4.99 (Image) – When it comes to video games and apps, I’m all thumbs. I most definitely wouldn’t make it in a future where a bunch of poor kids have been raised by an app to be an army to overthrow the government, that’s for damn sure. But Charlie Fellows has to as he’s a part of said army. This book is being described as Blade Runner meets The Social Network. Does this mean that Jesse Eisenberg is a replicant? It would explain a lot. (Andrew)
INCREDIBLE HULK: LAST CALL #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – The legendary 90s Hulk team of Peter David and Dale Keown join forces once again to tell the tale of the last days of the Green Goliath. The passage of time wears on Bruce Banner as does the crushing realization that being the Hulk means there will never be an end to his story. Or maybe, just maybe, a nigh omnipotent threat on the horizon will give both sides of Jade Jaws what they want: one final smash-fest for the Hulk and a definitive denouement for Bruce Banner. (Kris)
CAPTAIN MARVEL #6 $3.99 (Marvel) – Hey, there’s a lot of Marvel titles on this week’s list. Guess I’ll add one more. That crazy War of the Realms thing is still going on. (I’m sure you’ll hear more about it later.) I’m not a fan of event books. Know what I am a fan of? The Enchantress, Black Widow, Doctor Strange, and some big time action brought by Kelly Thompson and Annapaola Martello. Thankfully, this comic has all of that and zombies!(Andrew)
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #5 $3.99 (Boom!) – Last issue finally capitalized on the promise of what a modern Buffy reboot has to offer. The creative team made a big move that I don’t want to spoil here, that should have some fairly massive consequences going forward. I’m actually pretty damn stoked to see where things head from here. If you’re a lifelong or lapsed fan, this issue should not be missed. (Kris)
GREEN LANTERN #8 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Is there a more iconic team up than Green Lantern and Green Arrow? Probably not. That’s why Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp are bringing us their version of the Hard Traveling Heroes. It’s got the banter and grit of the old 70s team ups but with the added fun of drugs from outer space! The emerald pair must deal with Space Junkies! Now that’s a modern update you don’t see everyday. (Andrew)
WAR OF THE REALMS #5 (OF 6) $4.99 (Marvel) – It’s Midgard’s last stand as the Black Panther gathers every hero that’ll pick up a phone, smoke signal or telepathic suggestion. Will Thor finally return to layeth the smaketh down on Malekith’s accursed ass? Or will the Ten Realms rest firmly in the grasp of the darkest of Dark Elves for all of eternity? Give this book a read to find out. (Kris)
BLACK CAT #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – I guess it’s the Marvel New Comics blog this week. I’ll end it off by adding yet another title from The House of Ideas. And this one’s Dark Elf free! Black Cat’s got her own damn series. Good for her. She’s on the run from both the cops and the head of the Theives Guild. Not so good for her. But cats, they always land on their feet, right? That’s what Felicia Hardy intends to do as she stays one step ahead of the competition. She’s got nine lives but this will probably run about 10 issues. Get your paws on issue number 1 and enjoy the finer things just like Felicia! (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
