Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
TRUST FALL #1 $3.99 (Aftershock) -Ash Parsons has a pretty handy genetic quirk that allows her to teleport any object anywhere – excluding her own damn self. To her family, generations deep in organized crime, that makes Ash the perfect tool to regain their lost underworld prominence. Want a whole fleet of cars stolen? Bank vault jacked? Cop cars dropped into the middle of a lake? No problem. Or, at least it wouldn’t be a problem if Ash was cool with being used and abused. But, y’know, she’s not into that. Things’ll be tense around Thanksgiving probably.(Kris)
SUPERMAN #12 $3.99 (DC Comics) – It’s time for a big-ass super fight! Superman, Supergirl, Jor-El and Superbly throw down with Rogol Zaar, General Zod and an army of assassins from space! Bear in mind, it’s taken a super-team-up just to beat Rogol Zaar in the past. This is actually a fight where the super folk are the underdogs. This is crazytown! There’s a lot riding on this win as the truth about Krypton’s destruction is set to be revealed. It’s a rough time to be a part of the house of El right now. (Andrew)
IMMORTAL HULK #19 $3.99 (Marvel) – What is more horrifying than the monstrous, malevolent Devil Hulk? I have no idea. Ol’ Bruce Banner is about to find out in this latest issue of the instant classic Immortal Hulk run! And whatever it is, it’s coming for him, sucka! (Kris)
PENNY NICHOLS GN $19.99 (Top Shelf) – Finding what you love to do is hard for some. Penny didn’t really know what she wanted from life until she fell into working with some indie film folk making a horror movie called Blood Wedding. Now she’s dealing with the many horrors of low budget filmmaking. It’s a funny, feel-good graphic novel about the world of DIY movies. What’s not to love? (Andrew)
SONATA #1 $3.99 (Image) – In this new comic from Image, a young girl finds herself caught in between two races, both laying claim to the same planet that has been prophesied as their promised land. One people are peaceful while the others are War-like conquerors. Both must contend with the Sleeping Giants native to this new world. While I find the setup intriguing, the artwork in this book is truly something to behold. It’s worth a look based on the strength of the visuals alone. (Kris)
GLOW #2 $3.99 (IDW) – What happens when the “paid television actor” ladies of GLOW come face to face with the “real deal wrestler” women of the Star Primas? The GLOW girls got to step up their game as they don’t want to come off as unskilled amateurs. The only problem is, they’re kinda unskilled amateurs. Tini Howard and Hannah Templer bring us another funny issue of a comic that’s fitting of the funny T.V. show it’s based on. (Andrew)
SILVER SURFER BLACK #1 (OF 5) $3.99 (Marvel) – Donny Cates and Tradd Moore team up to reveal what became of the Silver Surfer once he was sucked into the black hole back in Guardians #1. By all appearances, something looks to have changed the Surfer at a fundamental level. His once lustrous form twists and transforms into something resembling the ebony Surfer first witnessed in the alternate future of Thanos Wins! Could this be a permanent change for the Sentinel of The Spaceways or are Cates and Moore just a couple of no-good teases? We’ll find out this Wednesday! (Kris)
JUGHEAD: TIME POLICE #1 $3.99 (Archie) – We live in strange times. A time where folks have finally figured out that Jughead is a way more interesting character than Archie and deserves top billing. This is also a time where the Archie Horror books are king, so it’s nice to see a non-horror Archie comic get some attention. What’s better than horror? Time Travel, of course! Juggy goes back in time to fix the error that got him banned from the Annual Riverdale Bake-Off. This leads to Jugs getting stuck in an epic battle to keep the time stream intact. All of this is perfectly plausible. I can’t wait to see what time looks like when Jughead’s done with it. (Andrew)
THE RIDE: BURNING DESIRE #1 (OF 5) $3.99 (Image) – After spending 15 years in prison on a murder rap, former detective Samantha Vega is back on the streets and looking to make some semblance of a legitimate life for herself. Unfortunately, being an ex-con makes that somewhat difficult and the only work she can find is busting heads at an *ahem* “exotic dance club”. I’m sure nothing will occur that will draw Vega back into the seedier side of society at such a stand-up establishment.(Kris)
SNOWPIERCER HC VOL 01 THE ESCAPE $19.99 (Titan) – Five years ago, I got to read the French comic Snowpiercer. It’s a phenomenal book that’s spawned sequel comics, a feature film and an upcoming television series. In a dystopian future, all of civilization lives on the Snowpiercer, a train that’s one thousand and one cars long. The rich live near the front in luxury. The poor live at the very back of the train in squalor. One man who wants to change this travels from one end of the train to the other in a pretty epic story. Fair Warning: even though it’s summertime now, you may still need to wear a sweater after reading this. (Andrew)
