Hey not sure what to watch this week on the small screen? No worries #SetTheVCR is here to help you make some of those decisions easier. Each week Sammy Younan and I will give you our picks for each day of the coming week. Please note – enjoyment NOT guaranteed.

All times are Eastern Standard Time so please adjust for your time zone.

Winter is coming… for sports fans at least, as the NBA Finals and the Stanley Cup will end this week. For sure Sammy’s going to be talking some ball but maybe for only one more night. I’m sure this is bittersweet for him as well as he had the Warriors to win for months while still being a Raps fan. If they win on Monday night he will have no more NBA until the pre-season starts in September. Sure he doesn’t have to wear pants but he’s got no backcourt to help him through the dog days of summer.

This week is Creature Feature Week on #SetTheVCR! We open with Raptors and close with a Swamp Thing. Oh and Kevin Bacon’s Moustache. Get your G.I. Joe nightlight out… gonna be some long nights.

Monday, June 10

NBA Finals (9pm / ABC) – Game 5. It is the biggest game in the history of the Toronto Raptors as much as it is huge for the NBA. Shockingly the Raptors have the Golden State Warriors easily one of the greatest teams of the modern era down 3 games to 1. The Raptors have also shockingly won 2 games back to back on Oakland. As injuries continue to ravage and deplete the Warriors will they succumb to the Raptors or will they shockingly mount an offense? Tonight will the Toronto Raptors become NBA Champions? (Sammy)

Gentleman Jack (10pm / HBO)FINALE! Now that the show has come to end I will have to find some time to sit down and watch it finally. As with a lot of shows these days I end up binging them after they finish their seasons. Which has two benefits for me – first I get to see the story unfold without having to wait a week in between. Second I find it helps with the storytelling as you don’t end up forgetting or missing as much since it’s the only thing you are watching. Many shows are better watched by doing this. While it’s not for everyone it works for me plus if you don’t have a way to watch them like this it’s hard to do. (Mr. Green)

Tuesday, June 11

Ice on Fire (8pm / HBO) – Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest is yet another global warming documentary. Leo has great compassion for the environment and… for supermodels though sadly only one of ’em stars in his HBO documentaries. Cue the “More You Know” star… (Sammy)

Press Your Luck (10pm / ABC)PREMIERE! The return of one of my favourite game shows growing up. This show was so much fun to watch back in the day when I was home from school in the summers or when I was sick. NO WHAMMIES, NO WHAMMIES, NO WHAMMMIES! Was even shouted by me back then. Of course, there was the controversy around the guy who came on the show after figuring out the board pattern and beat the game completely. I have a feeling that won’t be happening this time out.

Wednesday, June 12

Comin’ In Hot (3am / Netflix) – Netflix continues to be a stand up special pusher and the latest offering is another Jo Koy treat. Comin’ In Hot is the follow up to 2017’s Jo Koy: Live from Seattle (most excellent… check that out if you haven’t.) I’d like to say I can quit anytime but I’m happily addicted to these comedy specials. (Sammy)

grown-ish (8pm / Freeform) – The first spin-off from Kenya Barris’ hit Black-ish currently in its second season. Starring Yara Shahidi who is my pick to play Riri Williams (Iron Heart) in the MCU continues to have fun away from home while at college. She was always the least dramatic of the Johnson kids but still entertaining each week with her no bullshit sensibilities. This week another member of the Johnson clan shows up with Junior coming to help Zoey while she goes out to party with friends. Plus this show has Deon Cole as the Dean of Students at Zoey’s school somehow. Deon is always hilarious in whatever show he is in. (Mr. Green)

Thursday, June 13

NBA Finals? (9pm / ABC) – Technically this post shouldn’t exist. It’s Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals back in Oakland. Raptors should have wrapped it all up on Monday… if anything this post should be about the parade details. Right? So ignore it and see what Mr. Green has to offer. (Sammy)

A.P. Bio (8:30 / NBC)FINALE! This. Is. It. The last two episodes of what is one of my favourite shows currently airing on TV. It’s still a total sham that NBC cancelled this show. The second season really opened up the world of Whitlock high and what Jack could do once you remove his goal of returning to Stanford. With an ensemble as big as this you would think there would be a weak link in the show but there isn’t, not one. It’s a credit to the writers, directors but especially this talented cast. Especially Allisyn Ashley Arm and Paula Pell who are standouts beyond Howerton and Oswalt. I’m sad to see it end but hopeful that one of the streaming services will give it a try for another season. Fingers crossed. (Mr. Green)

Friday, June 14

Marvel’s Jessica Jones (Anytime / Netflix) – The first of two cancelled comic book tv shows for your evening’s viewing pleasure! While Mr. Green handles poor Swamp Thing over on Netflix the final season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones drops. This, of course, is not only the end of Jessica but the end of Marvel on Netflix. What happens next depends on how much you believe of what you read online. Also, nobody has confirmed what happens to Jessica’s leather jacket now that the show is done. (Sammy)

Swamp Thing (3am / DC Universe) – Okay, yes the show has already been cancelled however that has nothing to do with its quality. It’s a multi-faceted situation with many story-lines taking place to be its ultimate downfall. There was the tax rebate error ($14 million instead of $40 million) caused by a North Carolina bureaucrat, top executives rumoured wanting a more procedural show versus horror and the upcoming WB Streaming service dropping later this fall. All of this plus I’m sure there is more going on that lead to the early end of the series. Which now all put together makes the other series on DC Universe feel in jeopardy as well. Hey, at least you can enjoy the show now while you can. (Mr. Green)

Saturday, June 15

Nothing (No Time / No Channel) – I got nothing… fortunately Mr. Green has a Rockit which is always fun for a Saturday night. (Sammy)

Austin City Limits (8pm / PBS) – This week on the show Jazz keyboardist and composer Herbie Hancock. Austin City Limits continues to program the most diverse and interesting group of musicians each week. And with a back catalogue that runs decades, there is so much they pull out of the vault as well. Always been a favourite show to check out for musicians you may not be familiar with especially once I realized that it wasn’t always country acts they booked. I have seen some really amazing bands play on this stage over the years. The list includes Pearl Jam, Jack White, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Mos Def, Florence and the Machine and Nine Inch Nails to name a few. Herbie is another great act to perform. (Mr. Green)

Sunday, June 16

City On A Hill (9pm / Showtime) – I have no clue what City On A Hill is about because I keep getting distracted by Kevin Bacon’s moustache. It’s as distracting as subtitles in a movie where everybody is speaking English. I did see some gritty streets and guns but that facial hair. Also… that’s a great punk band name: Kevin Bacon’s Moustache. (Sammy)

The Good Fight (9pm / CBS)PREMIERE! Okay, this one’s a bit of cheat as it already premiered months ago on CBS All Access streaming service. However, this is its network debut coming from The Good Wife team. I know there plenty of fans of this universe out there already and I’m sure that there will be more once they start watching this show. It’s high-quality TV regardless if it’s your cup of tea or not. (Mr. Green)

Well, there you go plenty of options for the week ahead. Enjoy yourself and watch responsibly.

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
