Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
BATMAN #75 $4.99 (DC Comics) – City of Bane begins here! Tom King and his artistic collaborators have been putting ol’ Batsy through the ringer ever since this current Bat-series launched. And this new storyline? It shall be King’s final punch in the bat-mush before he transitions his Bat-epic over to the forthcoming Batman/Catwoman title. So what the hell is City of Bane all about? Just what it sounds like. The lucha-masked, muscle-bound maniac and his minions have taken control of Gotham. Bruce Wayne has been too busy beating up his dad in the desert to do anything about it. I feel the above sentence is something we can all personally relate to. Totally a universal issue. (Kris)
PUNISHER ANNUAL #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – When artist Adam Gorham told me that he was drawing a Punisher story where Frank Castle and J. Jonah Jameson go to space to fight a Brood Queen, I couldn’t wait for it to come out. It’s a story that I never knew I wanted until I heard about it. Now, it’s all I can think about. Thankfully, the wait is over. This madcap story written by Karla Pacheco finally hits the comic racks this week and the world is a better place for it. (Andrew)
AQUAMAN #50 $4.99 (DC Comics) – Black Manta just got kicked out of the super-evil clubhouse, so now he is back to being a pain directly in Aquaman’s ass. Just in time for the sea king’s big anniversary issue! Am I a sucker for a good Black Manta story? You bet your ass I am. Am I a sucker for any Black Manta story? You bet your ass I am! (Kris)
SUPERMANS PAL JIMMY OLSEN #1 (OF 12) $3.99 (DC Comics) – Another maxi-series that spins out of the Leviathan event and once again, it’s helmed by a great writer. Matt Fraction takes a crack at the cub reporter with a super best friend and the stakes are high. Brian Michael Bendis says this book is “Hawkeye Good”. That’s pretty high praise! You have to check it out now! (Andrew)
X-FORCE #10 $3.99 (Marvel) -Everything in X-Force has been building to this. With House of X and Powers of X right around the corner, this may be the last time we get this creative team, with this combination of characters, telling the story they want to tell. And that story? Well, it’s been a helluva lot of fun, for starters. That’s gonna continue as we head into what should be one super-colossal Mutant-powered throwdown. X-Force has “rescued” what’s left of Nathan from the clutches of his shiny, evil doppelgänger and now its time for Kid Cable’s pals to punch Stryfe and the Mutant Liberation Front in the face as many times as possible. I for one applaud such punching. (Kris)
ASSASSIN NATION #5 (OF 5) $3.99 (Image) – It’s the final issue of this hilarious, high-octane adventure! Just like the 80s action films that inspired this series, Assassin Nation is gonna go out in a blaze of glory. It’s the crazy 3rd act we’ve all been waiting for as the assassins shoot it out with nothing but their wits, the power of friendship, and a whole lotta guns to defend themselves. It took a long while for Kyle Starks and Erica Henderson to work together on such a fun series. Hopefully it won’t take as long next time as this book is bad-ass! (Andrew)
SILVER SURFER BLACK #2 (OF 5) $3.99 (Marvel) – Last issue of Surfer concluded with an extremely massive reveal. A reveal that stretches across time and space. A reveal that illustrated just how connected everything Donny Cates has been doing at Marvel really is. Can this story still be enjoyed for the stand-alone, old-school, 70’s style psychedelic mind-fuck it revels in being? You bet your ass. But it’s working on a few other levels as well. Super-fun, big idea stuff going on here, people. Check it out. (Kris)
PEARL #11 $3.99 (Jinxworld) – Listen, folks. I’ve praised this book a lot in previous months on this here New Comics blog. You know when I do that, I’m not just blowing smoke up your ass. This is one of the best damn crime comics out there. It’s also some of the best work that Brian Michael Bendis has ever written. It’s hands down the BEST work Michael Gaydos has ever done. Pearl found out all about her Yakuza heritage and has come home to San Francisco to claim her spot in the new order. READ THIS BOOK! (Andrew)
LITTLE BIRD #5 (OF 5) $3.99 (Image) – Little Bird concludes with this issue right here and man, am I heartbroken. I have been loving this series since day one. While I feel this story has been told in exactly the manner and length that the creative team intended, I wish we could spend just a little more time in the world they’ve created. In this final chapter, the titular character is seemingly dead. The Bishop’s religious fanatics appear to have won. The resistance has been destroyed. Or has it? Our pals Darcy and Ian wouldn’t let it all end on the most downer-y of down notes, would they?(Kris)
CAPTAIN MARVEL #8 $3.99 (Marvel) – Ever since Carol Danvers returned to full time Avengers duty, a lot of crazy shit has happened. That was just the tip of the iceberg. The shit really hits the fan in this issue as Carol’s Kree heritage is exposed to the world! The populous of the Earth are not really big fans of anything Kree. Carol’s gone from beloved hero to Public Enemy #1 in the span of a news cycle. How’s the Captain gonna react to this? Maybe get pushed to her darkest edge? Sounds about right. Kelly Thompson and Carmen Nunez Carnero have brought us some pretty exciting adventures thus far. I can only imagine that they’ll kick it up a notch in this story. We’ll find out this Wednesday. (Andrew)
