Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
ONCE & FUTURE #1 (OF 6) $3.99 (Boom!) – What’s a retired septuagenarian monster hunter to do when a group of Nationalists resurrect some Arthurian-age evil for their own nefarious purposes? Rope in their museum curator grandson for a little old fashioned magical mystery tour, of course! Kieron Gillen Dan Mora of Klaus fame wield the Excalibur of comic creating excellence in this new series from Boom! You just know it’s worth a look. (Kris)
THE WHITE TREES #1 (OF 2) $4.99 (Image) – Chip Zdarsky teams with Kris Anka and Matt Wilson to tell a fantasy tale about 3 old warriors who have put the band back together to save their missing kids! The guys have described the book as buff dream daddies on one last adventure. There are NO plans to collect this comic, so if you want to read it, you gotta pick up the issues. Don’t delay! Pick up your copy this Wednesday! (Andrew)
POWERS OF X #2 (OF 6) $4.99 (Marvel) – Okay, I’d really like to discuss the game-changing bit of continuity hugging-and-caressing awesomeness that occurred in House of X #2. But it was just so great that I don’t want to spoil it for anyone on the off-chance that simply existing on the internet hasn’t already done so. Suffice to say that it was really special in my opinion. This series continues to be a revelation and I can’t wait to see how the new information we’re now armed with comes into play going forward. Hickman is really on his game and his artistic collaborators are more than pulling their weight. These are the best X-Men comics in years. Make no mistake. (Kris)
OMNI #1 $3.99 (Humanoids) – Think Fast! It’s a saying you hear all the time. But what if you actually could think fast? See all the angles of a situation and find the answers in an instant? Dr. Cecelia Cobbina can do just that. She got her powers at the same time as a bunch of other folks when the planet Ignited. Now she’s think fast and has the answers for everything. So it’s obvious she’s going to figure out what caused the Ignited. It’s been awhile since I’ve gotten to read some Devin Grayson. Looking forward to this one. (Andrew)
SILVER SURFER BLACK #3 (OF 5) $3.99 (Marvel) – Trapped in the past with his powers waning, the Sentinel of the Spaceways is being tested by Knull in ways he’s never experience before. Can a surprise team-up with Ego the Living Planet turn the tide and help the Surfer make it back to the future before his powers completely abandon him to the black? There’s so much goodness to be had in Donny Cates and Tradd Moore’s epic mini. I definitely think you need to join me in its enjoyment. (Kris)
PUNK MAMBO #5 (OF 5) $3.99 (Valiant) – I was gonna write some jokes based on Mambo #5, but I think we’ve all done a good job of pretending that that song never even happened. Makes me wonder what Lou Bega has done with his life. (What have I done with my life that I’m contemplating the fate of the guy that sang Mambo #5?) Anyways, Punk Mambo faces the big bad and must make the ultimate sacrifice. Come for the great story. Stay for Adam Gorham’s bad-ass artwork…..a little bit of this makes you a fan. (I got one in there!) (Andrew)
CONAN THE BARBARIAN: EXODUS #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – In this completely wordless telling of Conan’s first journey outside of Cimmeria, we shall finally bear witness to modern master Esad Ribic completely unleashed. Credited as both writer and artist, Esad himself will be the absolute dictator of whatever visual insanity ends up on the finished pages. That prospect, as well as the fact that this is Esad Ribic working on fucking Conan, is enough to make this issue a definitive must-buy. Don’t miss out. (Kris)
THE FORGOTTEN QUEEN TP $9.99 (Valiant) – If there’s one thing that Tini Howard knows how to do, it’s write a damn fine, compelling action-fantasy saga. And dammit, she’s done it again with The Forgotten Queen. This is the second Valiant title with a heavy magic influence I put on the list this week. I don’t usually do that. That means that these books are really good. You should check ’em out! (Andrew)
JOKER: THE BRONZE AGE OMNIBUS HC $99.99 (DC Comics) – Tons of classic 70s era tales featuring the Clown Prince of Crime are collected here in this beautiful new omnibus for your singular enjoyment. Brining together issues of Batman, Detective, Brave and the Bold, Wonder Woman, and the actual Joker series amongst others, this big bastard of a book is the perfect page-turner for any fan of Mister J. Not to mention the fact that this sucker contains the never-before-published Joker #10, and you’ve got yourself a collection that the Ace of Knaves himself would not be able to pass up. (Kris)
GWENPOOL STRIKES BACK #1 (OF 5) $3.99 (Marvel) – It is a dark time for the Rebellion. Although the Death Star has been destroyed….. Sorry, that always happens when I read the words Strikes Back in a title. Gwenpool is back in a solo story. She’s desperate to avoid comic book limbo. So she’s doing things that’ll keep her interesting. Things like acquiring actual super-powers and unmasking Spider-Man. She’s going for broke with this one. The first issue is marvellously meta as always! This might just be the title to make sure that Gwenpool gets to stick around in her own comic book just a little while longer. Pick up the issue and help Gwen survive another day. (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
