Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
SUPERMANS PAL JIMMY OLSEN #3 (OF 12) $3.99 (DC Comics) – This issue’s story is titled “Who Shot The Decoy Corpse of Jimmy Olsen?” and goddammit, that’s all I need. (Kris)
GI JOE #1 $3.99 (IDW) – Paul Allor and Chris Evenhuis bring us a new take on the “Real American Hero” that is most intriguing. It’s a world where Cobra has won and is rapidly taking down governments across the globe. GI Joe has taken the fight underground, using regular folks living in occupied territories as saboteurs and spies. For a series that originally began during the final decade of the “cold war”, this sure is a hot take! Pick up this book if you want to know if they pull it off……and knowing is half the battle! (Andrew)
YOU ARE OBSOLETE #1 $3.99 (Aftershock) – Creepy blonde kids in an isolated village are killing off adults once they hit 40 years of age. A reporter hits town to investigate only to learn that while the classic creepy children song remains the same, the melody has been updated with a heaping helping of technology! Ah technology. Assisting children with their murdery urges since time immemorial. (Kris)
BLACK PANTHER AND THE AGENTS OF WAKANDA #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – The king of Wakanda now has his own super-team! The line up is a bit weird. General Okoye makes sense but the other 3 seem pretty random. Kazar, Gorilla Man and the Wasp? Did they put a bunch of animal and jungle themed characters on a dart board and this is where the darts landed? Time will tell if this a good book, but it’s written by Jim Zub so it should be entertaining. Colour me interested! (Andrew)
VALKYRIE JANE FOSTER #3 $3.99 (Marvel) – Last issue, Heimdall died at the hands of Bullseye. As the sole member of the Valkyrior, it’s now Jane Foster’s duty to guide him to his eternal reward. Only problem is she has no goddamn clue how to do that. Join Jane and Heimdall as they Journey into Mystery in search of the All-seeing Norse god’s final rest. (Kris)
ASSASSIN NATION TP VOL 01 $14.99 (Image) – I’ve been into this book since issue #1 hit the stands! Now the whole story can be told. A former hitman who believes someone’s gunning for him hires 20 other hitmen (and women) to be his bodyguards. Oh yeah, that’ll work out. If you heard me talk about it on Geek Hard with artist Erica Henderson, you already know it’s one funny book. Now see for yourself by picking up the whole story! (Andrew)
HOUSE OF X #5 (OF 6) $4.99 (Marvel) – After the last Powers of X issue’s very confusing Phalanx-fueled interlude, we’re now thrust back into the main event. With everything going boom last issue, I’m very intrigued to discover just where this is all going. Have we been watching Moira’s tenth life? If so, will her “choice” be soon at hand? What possible course corrections can mutantkind make to avoid their seemingly inevitable fate? It’s all coming to a head, and Hickman’s master plan for the future of Marvel Mutantdom should be made (somewhat) more clear. (Kris)
INFERIOR FIVE #1 (OF 12) $3.99 (DC Comics) – It’s safe to say that some things are not right in the town of Dangerfield, Arizona. Weird stuff has been happening since the “Invasion“. Most people don’t seem to notice. They got their own problems. Lucky for them, 5 misfit kids know what’s up. They’re on the case and they’ll get to the bottom of the odd happenings. Leave it to them. Now speaking of being absolutely inferior, here’s a word or two on Absolute Carnage! (Andrew)
ABSOLUTE CARNAGE #3 (OF 5) $4.99 (Marvel) – Scorpion has been paralyzed and Miles Morales just got absorbed into the Carnage collective! Just how the hell are Eddie Brock and Peter Parker going to possibly beat back the forces of crimson-coated madness? With a little help from their friends, of course! Peter’s friends, mostly… Captain America and Wolverine aren’t exactly big Venom fans. Well, Eddie Brock-Venom. They both thought Flash was pretty dope. But he dead. Yeah. (Kris)
THE FOREVER MAPS #1 $3.99 (Scout) – It’s the classic story of “guy finds map – map leads to other maps – he keeps following the maps and never gets old“. That’s a story that doesn’t get old, amirite? But here’s the kicker, friend: if he stops following the maps, he gets older really fast. Guess you gotta follow those maps, son! Beats the alternative….which is dying, if you haven’t caught on yet. This guy has been following maps for over a century and everyone he’s cared about is dead. He must examine himself and decide what’s more important? Living forever or having a life worth living. This book is part of Scout’s new Binge imprint, so after this issue, a full trade with the rest of the story will be available in a couple of months. Lets see if this issue hooks ya! (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
