Hey not sure what to watch this week on the small screen? No worries #SetTheVCR is here to help you make some of those decisions easier. Each week Sammy Younan and I will give you our picks for each day of the coming week. Please note – enjoyment NOT guaranteed.

All times are Eastern Standard Time so please adjust for your time zone.

The excitement is beginning to build up as we close in on our Fall TV returns. So, it’s going to get rather busy around here over the next few weeks as we’ll have plenty of premieres starting to show up below. Stay tuned.

A rather frightful week this week: we start off with a Swamp Thing and conclude with Pennywise The Dancing Clown. Hope your G. I. Joe nightlight is ready to go.

Monday, September 2

Swamp Thing (10pm / Showcase) – The latest DC Universe tv show comes to Canada…kinda. Swamp Thing was cancelled after the first episode! Oh Boy. So these 10 episodes are all you Canadians get (premiered in the US on May 31!). Complicating matters even more? Apparently ol’ Swampy is not in the same (DC) universe as Titans and Doom Patrol. I don’t understand what DC is/was attempting to do with this. However, Swamp Thing is a super friend (of mine) so I will watch. “The series follows Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed) as she investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana, soon discovering that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets.” Yup! (Please Note: Swamp Thing premieres on Showcase with a two-night event on Monday, September 2 and Tuesday, September 3 at 10 p.m. Regular episodes air on Tuesdays at 10 p.m.) (Sammy)

The Terror (9pm / AMC) – This week is my catch up on this series as Geek Hard will be talking with one of the stars of the show Lee Shorten on Friday at 7pm EST / 4pm PST. I enjoyed the first season so I know already what to expect from this show. If you haven’t seen the first season don’t worry at all as this is anthology show like American Horror Story so no need to watch the previous season to jump in on this one. (Mr. Green)

Tuesday, September 3

Conan Without Borders: Greenland (10pm / TBS) Conan Without Borders is one of Conan O’Brien’s best bits! This time Conan finds himself in Greenland. That’s… the bit. And away we go! (Sammy)

Valley of the Damned (10pm / ID) – Some true crime for you this week. Investigation Discovery airs a 6-part series chronicling the murders that took place around an area of Colorado known as Prison Valley. It is home to 6 federal prisons and America’s only Supermax. There has been an abundance of murders in this small area and many think the town of Dryden is cursed. The series takes a look at that idea and what has been going on since the late ’80s. (Mr. Green)

Wednesday, September 4

Pennyworth (9 p.m. / Showcase) – I recommended Pennyworth for American viewers on July 28 and now for Canadian viewers, it is your turn to find out if Batman’s butler really delivers. Pennyworth looks decent: for such a half-baked concept. I’m begging like a Dickens orphan, no wink-wink Batman “easter egg” cheeze, just tell a damn good story with tons of British-Bond ruckus. Pennyworth the 10-episode series follows the British adventures of Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon) who formed a security company and works for billionaire Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge) who’s not yet Bruce’s father. (Sammy)

BH90210 (9pm / FOX) – Oh Sammy’s going to mad at me. I just can’t help myself though, this show has been a lot of fun to watch. I got hooked into the meta world of the show and enjoy all the crazy machinations of the characters on the show plus the over-arching gonzo plot with the crazy stalker angle they are dealing with. It’s just a ton of fun. (Mr. Green)

Thursday, September 5

Hiking With Kevin (Anytime / YouTube)Hiking With Kevin is up to Season 3?! I’d never heard of it until today. S’like Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. Only instead of cars, it’s Nikes; instead of coffee, it’s fresh air. Same ambient tv though. I like this… Season 3 hikers include Lisa Kudrow, Alec Baldwin, Christian Slater, Tiffany Haddish, Sean Hayes, Connie Britton and Rita Wilson. Long as I can sit and watch people hike I’m In! (True Story… I was in nature once… it was… weird.) (Sammy)

The Lego Movie (8pm / ABC) – ABC is showing The Lego Movie during the first week of back to school with nothing else on is a smart move especially going against the NFL that night. However in many homes that will be a losing battle for the little tykes. Still, it was fun back when I saw it in theatres and the soundtrack by Mark Mothersbaugh is outstanding. (Mr. Green)

Friday, September 6

Titans (3am / DC Universe) – DC Universe brings the hard R as Right on Ruckus with Titans: Season 2! Season 1 was uneven but I enjoyed it more than DC’s CW shows so I’ll be back for Season 2. The violence and especially the Fincher-dark tone was an understandably a Judas Contract for many Titans fans. It’s however what sold me. That and the Toronto locations! (In Season 1 Episode 3: where’s that roller rink…Hamilton?! That looks TIGHT. Wow! Wanna go?). (Sammy)

ELITE (3am / Netflix) – Season two of a Spanish show dealing with teens at a top-level school that only has the countries best students… the elite if you will. It has the usual sex, drugs and murder that shows like have had for decades now. But it does look like lots of fun. Another one of those buried hidden gems from another country that Netflix has been keeping for a while now. Since they have been losing shows due to the upcoming streaming wars I have been enjoying finding other title like this as they begin to push their other content from around the world. This looks to be another solid entry on that front. (Mr. Green)

Saturday, September 7

Hip-Hop Evolution (Anytime / Netflix)Hip-Hop Evolution Season 3 (!!) dropped on Netflix globally on September 6th, 2019 but I was busy with Titans so today I’m busy with… titans?! Of the rap variety. Many well known MCs will be featured dropping science! This spectacular doc-series happily hosted by Shad K is a history of rap: Season 1 was the humble origins; Season 2 90s-gangsta. We’re moving into the present with Season 3.(Sammy)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (8pm / NBC) – Hey it’s Saturday there is not a lot on but at least this week NBC decided to air Harry Potter, but the last in the series for some odd reason. I liked it but it’s an odd choice to air like this. Well, at least there is something worthwhile to watch tonight. (Mr. Green)

Sunday, September 8

IT (Anytime / Netflix) – IT came out in 2017 which as you can tell is properly called Chapter 1. Turns out the Losers Club lived up to their name and did not finish off Pennyworth. Sigh. So on September 6, 2019 they come back to finish the job… as adults. Since the movies are deeply connected (the Kill Bills of horror) you’d to get in a review before Chapter 2. Added to Netflix earlier this month. Marketing FTW! (Sammy)

Ballers (10pm / HBO) – Who doesn’t love them some Rock “The Dwayne” Johnson? This show is a favourite of mine and has been since it started 5 years ago. Always fun in that usual HBO way of storytelling even with their comedies. Plus Rob Cordry and John David Washington plus the rest of the stellar cast what’s not to love. (Mr. Green)

Well, there you go plenty of options for the week ahead. Enjoy yourself and watch responsibly.

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
