Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
DEAD EYES #1 $3.99 (Image) – In this new mature readers series from Image Comics, Gerry Duggan and John McCrea, bring us the story of Martin Dobbs, aka Dead Eyes, a retired stick up man. He gets back in the game to save his wife from, presumably, mobsters or crooked cops or former criminal acquaintances or some other scummy underworld assholes. That’s usually how these things go, right? Anyway, this thing has action, drama, comedy, and all kinds of other good stuff. Should be quality, friends. (Kris)
BIZARRE ADVENTURES #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Hey, remember How Bizarre? That song by OMC from 1996? The song played everywhere! You couldn’t escape it. It was crazy. Don’t worry. This comic is much, much better than that song. Shang-Chi trades blows with a master of martial arts! Dracula goes toe to toe with a descendant of Van Helsing! Ulysses Bloodstone throws down with an opponent proficient in the dark arts. It’s basically a collection of stories of guys who have met their match. Every time they look around, they’re in their face. How Bizarre. How Bizarre. (Andrew)
DARK ARK: AFTER THE FLOOD #1 $3.99 (Aftershock) – For those unfamiliar, the Dark Ark series tells the story of an evil sorcerer named Shrae, tasked by his demonic benefactors to gather together all of the mystical and monstrous “unnatural” creatures he can find on a Dark Ark in order to ensure their survival. While God was looking out for Noah and the “good” creatures, Shrae was to ferry those of darkness to a new land. In this new series, the monsters have reached solid ground. Shrae is dead. His daughter Khalee has made a dark pact of her own with Shrae’s old masters in order to take command of the awful powers necessary to control the beasts she helped usher to the new world and protect her human family. But Khalee doesn’t know what the fuck she’s gotten herself into. Man-o-man, she’s about to find out. (Kris)
RUBY FALLS #1 (OF 4) $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Ann Nocenti brings us a neo-noir mystery woven through three generations of women. The sleepy town of Ruby Falls has its secrets. Lana is looking for answers regarding the cold case of the “disappearance” of Betty Gallagher, a progressive woman who went “missing” during the days of Ruby Falls’ mobster ruled past. The only leads she has to work with are her grandmother’s dementia-laden memories of the time. It doesn’t help that the rest of the town actively wants her to stop looking into the old case. This sounds like a page turner if I ever heard of one. (Andrew)
HOUSE OF X #6 (OF 6) $4.99 (Marvel) – We’ve almost reached the end of the beginning of Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men reset. It is all still extremely weird. But good weird. Still weird, though. Very, very weird. And you should be reading it. You probably are. But, y’know, tell your friends. (Kris)
GREEN LANTERN #12 $4.99 (DC Comics) – Hal Jordan faces off with his antimatter counterpart and the battle spells doom for the Corps. Check it out to read the last issue of Grant Morrison’s Green Lantern run. No, seriously, there’s no Green Lantern book coming next month. Grant will have another book with Hal soon…..but it won’t be a Green Lantern book? Blame it on the blackstar, baby. (Andrew)
BEWARE THE GHOST RIDER #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Johnny Blaze is the Ghost Ridin’ King of Hell, doing his damndest to keep all the nastiest of nasties locked nice and tight behind the burning prison bars of the abyss. Danny Ketch is the Earthbound Ghost Rider who would rather be doing literally anything else. He’s instead been tasked with dragging any escapees back into the Pit where they will be tortured for eternity! Fun for the whole family! (Kris)
CONTAGION #1 (OF 5) $3.99 (Marvel) – Ed Brisson brings us a story about what appears to be evil fungus spreading all over New York and draining the life force and memories of citizens and heroes alike. It’s a very creepy story! This is a weekly miniseries that runs throughout the month of October. Looks like Marvel’s street level heroes are getting ready for Halloween by fighting a bunch of organic goo. That sounds about right. (Andrew)
STRANGE SKIES OVER EAST BERLIN #1 $3.99 (Boom!) – In 1973, an American spy by the name of Herring is sent to infiltrate Soviet intelligence in East Berlin. What he discovers is that the Soviets have gotten their hands on a goddamn alien and are attempting to turn it into a weapon. Unfortunately for the Russians, they quickly discover that while they were attempting to harness the alien’s abilities, it was worming it’s way into their subconscious minds as aliens are often want to do. Basically, the Russians are fucked and Herring has to figure out how to stop the whole situation from snowballing before the whole world becomes fucked. Well, more fucked. It was already pretty fucked at the time. Even before the space aliens. (Kris)
SUPERMAN TP VOL 01 THE UNITY SAGA: PHANTOM EARTH $17.99 (DC Comics) – I’ve been saying for awhile now that I love this story by Brian Michael Bendis and Ivan Reis. This series made my list for the 10 Best comics of 2018. I picked Rogol Zaar for Villain of the Year. He’s the biggest threat the Man of Steel has seen in a long time. But he’s not the only problem. The Earth is stuck inside the Phantom Zone. Big Blue’s gotta take on Zaar with no yellow sun to give him that extra boost. Oh, and there’s also a slew of Krypton’s greatest criminals stuck in there with them as well. Loads of fun! You have to pick up this trade and find out what you’ve been missing. (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
