Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
SANDMAN UNIVERSE SPECIAL: HELLBLAZER #1 $4.99 (DC Comics) – John Constantine returns in a bonafide horror comic from the team of Si Spurrier and Marcio Takara. This one-shot launches the next chapter in the Sandman Universe as well as John Constantine’s second shot at life. But why was a bad apple like John brought back? What’s he here to do? Probably has something to do with the fact that Tim Hunter is also back and causing some mischief of his own. (Kris)
CONTAGION #5 (OF 5) $3.99 (Marvel) – Ed Brisson wraps up his five part weekly mini this week! The city of Manhattan has been taken over by a weird fungus that’s stealing the life force and memories of hero and citizen alike! The fungus might not be totally scary but it sure is creepy. Adam Gorham provides the no-so-pretty pictures (fungus is never pretty). (Andrew)
JOKER: KILLER SMILE #1 (OF 3) $5.99 (DC Comics) – There are so damn many Joker and Harley titles being pumped out by DC these days that it’s hard to tell which ones are worth your precious time. I’d hazard a guess that a psychological horror book written by Jeff Lemire and illustrated by Andrea Sorrentino taking place outside of regular continuity just about fits the freaking bill. Wouldn’t you? (Kris)
HELLBOY & THE BPRD: LONG NIGHT AT GOLOSKI STATION $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Just when good ole Hellboy thought he was in for a quiet night, three unwanted guests show up and ruin his party. He’s in a rundown Russian Train Station. Of course he’s going to end up in a demon battle. Come on, Hellboy! You’ve been in the game for how long? You knew something like this would happen. Enjoy the hellish carnage! (Andrew)
BASKETFUL OF HEADS #1 (OF 6) $3.99 (DC Comics) – Nothing says horror comics like Joe Hill, I says! (It’s almost as if there’s theme this week!) Mr. Hill has teamed up with DC Comics for the brand new Hill House imprint and accompanying series of self-contained spooky comic tales. The first one is here just in time for Halloween! For this flagship title, Hill teams with artist Leomacs for the story of June Branch, a young woman who accompanies her boyfriend to his summer gig as a cop on Brody island. Unfortunately, once on the island, Branch falls victim to a brutal home invasion and the only thing stopping her from meeting a grisly end is a supernaturally endowed Viking axe. An axe with the ability to lop of heads and keep those lopped heads talking well after death. Sounds weird. I will be reading. (Kris)
PUNK MAMBO TP $14.99 (Valiant) – Here’s another theme for ya! It’s Adam Gorham appreciation week. Not only does Contagion #5 come out, so does the trade for Adam’s Punk Mambo series he did with writer Cullen Bunn! Punk Mambo may be a punk but she’s also a voodoo priestess. Check out her haunted trip to Haiti where she takes on spirits to protect spirits and more! And check out our interview with Adam where he talks about Punk Mambo, Contagion and MORE! (Andrew)
SILVER SURFER BLACK #5 (OF 5) $3.99 (Marvel) – It’s the last issue of Silver Surfer Black. The Sentinel of the Spaceways makes his final, desperate stand against Knull, God of the Symbiotes, in the distant past. But the Surfer has been cut off from the source of his Power Cosmic for too long. His energies are severely depleted. Does a weakened Surfer stand a chance against one of the most powerful beings in the universe or is this the end of the former Norrin Radd? (Kris)
NIGHTWING ANNUAL #2 $4.99 (DC Comics) – Some crazy stuff has been happening with Nightwing. Back in Batman #55, Dick Grayson got shot in the head and the bullet took a lot of his memories. Now as “Ric” Grayson, there’s been some good stories (thanks Ben Percy!) and some not-so-good stories (looking at you Fabian and Scott!). This Annual, we get the story of what happened to the former boy wonder shortly after the bullet to the head. Dick “meeting” Bruce again and whatnot. Whatever happens, I’m sure it will be way better than the Absolute Carnage tie-in crap happening in Venom. (Andrew)
VENOM #19 $3.99 (Marvel) – Okay, listen, I know I haven’t had the greatest track record lately when it comes to predicting Dylan-related revelations in these Absolute Carnage tie-ins. BUT they’re explicitly advertising that we’re going to finally find out the truth about Eddie Brock’s son in this issue. So I feel confident in saying that it might probably absolutely perhaps totally happen this time around…maybe. (Kris)
DICK TRACY FOREVER TP $15.99 (IDW) – Ever the apologist that Kris is. I don’t have to say sorry for what I’m about to recommend! Dick Tracy is a classic comic book character from all the way back in ’31! Now, Michael Avon Oeming takes us from 1931 to 2031 with Dick Tracy Forever! Written and drawn by Oeming, the comic features stories from the past and into the future. You’ll see the classic Tracy take as well as a new future spin. And it all fits together in one fluid story. Not a bad way to spend your two bits. (Disclaimer: This book costs $15.99 and not two bits.) (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
