Hey not sure what to watch this week on the small screen? No worries #SetTheVCR is here to help you make some of those decisions easier. Each week Sammy Younan and I will give you our picks for each day of the coming week. Please note – enjoyment NOT guaranteed.
All times are Eastern Standard Time so please adjust for your time zone.
It’s the CW’s Premiere week! So there a bunch of CW shows that make the list this week. Don’t fret there is variety as well but most of the other networks are neck-deep in their seasons already and this is the CW’s traditional launch week so here we go.
Are you in a Happy Horror mood yet as Halloween approaches? Or are horror movies and tv shows like Christmas and you’re done with them? Let’s find out!Sammy Younan

Retro Report on PBS (9p
Black Lightning (9pm / CW) – PREMIERE! Black Lightning is back for a 3rd season of super-hero fun with some social justice mixed in each week. This also may mark the last time the series stands on its own in its separate universe from the rest of the Arrowverse. The rumours are strong that this show will be making the permanent jump into the shared universe along with Supergirl in the aftermath of Crisis this winter. It will be interesting to see how this affects the show going forward if that happens. Having Flash, Batwoman or the Legends showing up in Freeland will be a bit jarring at first but I hope it can work long term if they go this way. (Mr. Green)
Tuesday, October 8
Deon Cole: Cole Hearted (3am / Netflix) – Another #SetTheVCR another comedy special the latest from Netflix. You’ll probably recognize Deon Cole if you don’t know the name, he’s a former Conan writer which helps. As does that excellent pun in his title and the real reason I’m suggesting this: you remember kids you miss 100% of the puns you don’t make! (Sammy)
The Flash (8pm / CW) – PREMIERE! After the winter’s Crisis event this series will be the big dog in the yard of the Arrowverse with Arrow ending. Now entering its 6th season the show has matured into what it is. If you are a fan then you know what you are getting each week and if not no worries there are other shows for you tonight. I was happy with the last two seasons of the show overall but out of six seasons they have only had one big bad who wasn’t a speedster and that is still disappointing. The Flash has one of the best rogues galleries in ALL of comics and they keep coming back to just the speedsters each year. When are you going let that dog lie? We need other villains to keep this fresh and interesting. (Mr. Green)

Nothing! – So tonight you can watch Riverdale…enjoy yourself. However, since I do not have a recommendation for tonight’s TV I offer a PSA: Little Monsters is coming to Hulu this Friday! “A washed-up musician teams up with a teacher and a kids’ show personality to protect young children from a sudden outbreak of zombies.” Sounds like School of Rock meets Shaun of the Dead. That has the potential to be fun… (Sammy)
Nancy Drew (9pm / CW) – PREMIERE! The first of two classic to modern reboots this week. The other one is Sammy’s pick for Saturday. Still, this looks to really hit on the Riverdale audience hoping to rack up solid ratings as that show has for the CW. This show looks to capitalize on that vibe and mix in some classic Veronica Mars (which yes is just really Nancy Drew anyways) and some possible really fun Scooby-Doo supernatural shenanigans or non-shenanigans. If it weren’t for those meddling kids! (Mr. Green)

Nothing! – So tonight you can watch Supernatural, enjoy yourself. However, since I do not have a recommendation for tonight’s TV I offer a PSA: Fractured will be dropping tomorrow on Netflix. Did you enjoy Jodie Foster’s Flightplan? It’s like that, only the missing kid is in the hospital. And of course, nobody believes him! That has the potential to be fun. (Sammy)
Supernatural (8pm / CW) – PREMIERE! Okay, finally a non-Greg Berlanti run show on this week. Yes I know there are others but really it’s hard to find them at times even on other networks. The man is expanding everywhere as my Sunday pick proves. Regardless the Winchester boys are back for their final season of the show and it should be a doozy after how it ended last year. Chuck (God or is he? There are new fan theories floating around) came back and was none too pleased with the boy’s reaction to his plans. So he decided to pay them back by unleashing the end times on them. Since this is the last season I really hope they don’t do the usual bottle cap solution in the first or second episode and let the monsters run wild in full public view. It would show the stakes have been elevated for the world for the entire season. I can’t wait to see how this ends. (Mr. Green)
Friday, October 11
Friday Night SmackDown (8pm / FOX) – My first non-CW show this week. Phew, it had to happen eventually. However, I’m back to wrestling for tonight. After last weeks really well put together show… no, really the show’s production was really next level last Friday night. It blew all other WWE productions out of the water. FOX really helped them up their game for the look of the broadcast. Plus, the Cain Velasquez and Tyson Fury angles came off well. So let’s hope this week is just as good as last week. (Mr. Green)
Saturday, October 12
The Banana Splits Movie (
Nothing! – Since there is nothing on I will say see Sammy’s recommendation above for The Banna Splits Movie on SyFy. It is a weirdly strange twist on the reboot genre of old TV shows. This time they are using the horror element to give new audiences a fun ride while bending the minds of those who grew up watching it or in reruns over the years. It’s fun. (Mr. Green)
Sunday, October 13
Nothing! – See what Mr. Green has to say…otherwise: chill, eat nachos and smoke cigars (but not in that order!). (Sammy)
God Friended Me (8:30pm / CBS) – THe first season went really well for me. I’m still surprised by how much I enjoyed the shenanigans happening each week. This year things are changing and we see how much plus Miles is trying to find Cara in Paris. This show is a nice bit of light-hearted fun each week. Which is super useful when watching some of the darker shows I watch. It’s a welcome & refreshing change of pace. (Mr. Green)
Well, there you go plenty of options for the week ahead. Enjoy yourself and watch responsibly.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
