Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
X-MEN #2 $3.99 (Marvel) – The first issue of X-Men was pretty damn beautiful and contained some really excellent moments. But nothing about it truly grabbed me the way HoX and PoX did. Here’s hoping the relaunch picks up some steam as the X-Men prepare to face off with an evil island. Fingers crossed it all has something to do with that weird Apocalypse prophecy and the origin of Krakoa itself. That all seemed cool as hell. Let’s get some cool as hell in this book, yeah? (Kris)
CATALYST PRIME SEVEN DAYS #2 (OF 7) $3.99 (Lion Forge) – It’s Day TWO for the people of the Catalyst Prime Universe’s last SEVEN DAYS to live. An alien force has sentence the planet to an imminent demise. How are the heroes gonna battle back from this? They lost their boy Noble, who lived up to his name and was the best of them all. Now that he’s gone, the heroes don’t know what to do. Better hurry and figure out something quick. You’ve only got 5 days left! Gail Simone told us on Geek Hard that this book would be intense. She wasn’t kidding. Check it out! (Andrew)
SEA OF STARS #5 $3.99 (Image) – Kadyn is really settling into his role as a reborn space god. But will he ever be reunited with his actual, not-a-space-god-but-still-kick-ass father? This issue marks the conclusion of the first SOS arc and is certain to contain some major revelations. If you’ve been enjoying the book thus far, do not miss out in this instalment. (Kris)
FAR SECTOR #1 (OF 12) $3.99 (DC Comics) – Here comes a new Young Animal title that follows a Green Lantern into the Far Sector of Space. (So it’s aptly titled.) Jo Mullein protects the city of Enduring and its populous of 20 billion. There’s virtually no crime because the citizens are stripped of their ability to feel. There’s no motivation to do bad without the feels. But everything is about to change. Award winning author N.K. Jemisin makes her comic book debut with art from the amazing Jamal Campbell. There’s a lot of things to be excited about here. This may well be this year’s sleeper hit. I’m in. (Andrew)
BLACK STARS ABOVE #1 $3.99 (Vault) – In 1887, Eulalie Dubois is tasked with taking a parcel from her home deep in the Canadian Wilderness to an isolated northern town. Unfortunately for her, there is something in the forest that wants the parcel just as badly as Eulalie wants freedom from her mundane and lonely life. As the young girl seeks to accomplish her task, so too must she survive the cosmic horror that stalks her every move. Spooky, man. Spooky. (Kris)
PUNISHER: SOVIET #1 (OF 6) $3.99 (Marvel) – Garth Ennis is back at Marvel and he’s writing a Punisher comic. Makes sense. It’s a Marvel MAX title so expect it to be a big bloody affair. I had no idea they were still publishing MAX titles. I feel like they only do that if Garth wants to write The Punisher. They should call it Marvel GARTH. Ah, guess it doesn’t have quite the same effect without the alliteration. Anyways, there’s a bunch of dead Russian mobsters and Big Pun didn’t kill ’em. You better believe Franky boy’s gonna find out who did. (Andrew)
FAMILY TREE #1 $3.99 (Image) – An 8-year-old girl is literally turning into a tree, and her family are seemingly powerless to stop it. I say seemingly because her mama ain’t taking that shit and decides to hit the backroads of the good ol’ U S of A in search of answers and a possible cure. As one does. Sounds weird but oddly interesting? That’s Jeff Lemire for ya! This time around, he’s joined by the excellent Phil Hester. You know that tree child is gonna look as good as a tree child can look, by golly! (Kris)
GIRL ON FILM ORIGINAL GN $19.99 (Boom!) – Cecil Castellucci is a very cool creator. We got the chance to chat with her on an episode of Geek Hard back in 2018. This graphic novel is about Cecil’s life and features artwork from Vicky Leta, Jon Berg, V. Gagnon, and Melissa Duffy. Each artist draws a different era in Cecil’s being. This sounds like a very cool book worth checking out if you ask me. And you kinda did ask me by reading this. So there’s my two cents. (Andrew)
ABSOLUTE SWAMP THING BY ALAN MOORE HC VOL 01 $99.99 (DC Comics) – Ya know when people are all like, “Swamp Thing! I love Swamp Thing! He’s my favourite!”? But you’re all like, “Swamp Thing? I don’t get it”? Well, prepare to get it. How exactly can you get it? By literally getting this Absolute Swamp Thing hardcover, of course! This sumbitch contains the very first Alan Moore Swamp Thing story as well as several other masterpieces featuring the swampiest of things crafted by the cranky beard man and a host of talented artistic collaborators. This is your chance. Be one of the cool kids. Well, the cool kids that like Swamp Thing at least. The book won’t make you good at football or anything. (Kris)
GLOW VERSUS THE STAR PRIMAS TP $15.99 (IDW) – Just when the women of GLOW thought they’d have a weekend to themselves, Sam goes and books them for an appearance at Wrestlefest. What’s Wrestlefest? It’s an all weekend event where multiple wrestling promotions put on shows for rabid fans. They sign autographs and sell merch. Sounds like a fun weekend. But it might not be all that fun when GLOW is booked in a cross promotion show with the Star Primas – women who know how to REALLY wrestle. Will the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling be able to gel with the Star Primas to put on a show worth seeing? The fantastic Tini Howard was on Geek Hard in May to talk about this one and it lived up to her description of the series. It’s a fun read for GLOW and comics fans alike. (Andrew)
