Hey not sure what to watch this week on the small screen? No worries #SetTheVCR is here to help you make some of those decisions easier. Each week Sammy Younan and I will give you our picks for each day of the coming week. Please note – enjoyment NOT guaranteed.

All times are Eastern Standard Time so please adjust for your time zone.

Apple TV+ is here and Disney+ is around the corner so let us give you some other picks this week to help fill that void. I’ve come back to wrestling with some pitty picks this week and of course, Sammy will be happy to see that Supernatural is on the list.

Did you heard the one about 2 late night tv hosts and how they ended up on #SetTheVCR?

Sammy Younan

Monday, November 4

His Dark Materials (9pm / HBO) – I haven’t read the His Dark Materials fantasy books; so like high school I’m skipping the books and going to the tv show (I also saw 2007’s Golden Compass movie). This is an HBO-BBC co-production so I’ll check it out: it’s set in a world where all humans have animal companions called dæmons, which are the manifestation of the human soul. Ok then. It’s a fantasy series and I’m sure secrets will be revealed! Bonus? This is pressure-free viewing as it’s already been renewed for a second season. So watch now, watch later it’s all good; the fate of that world is not in your hands. (Sammy)

Monday Night RAW (8pm / USA) – Okay listen this is a pitty pick. No, really it is. After Friday’s Smackdown invasion angle with NXT (which was great), I’m curious about if they keep it rolling on RAW tonight. If they do then well done on making a dumb travel mistake error into an actual cool angle. If they don’t as I suspect will happen then they are complete idiots for missing the opportunity. The good news is that if they do screw this up tonight you can easily save yourself by switching over to Sammy’s pick at 9pm which looks to be fantastic. (Mr. Green)

Tuesday, November 5

Seth Meyers: Lobby Baby (3ame / Netflix) – So far in terms of Comedy 2019 my fav is Dave Chappelle (Sticks & Stones) and surprisingly by Bill Burr (Paper Tiger). I’m not the biggest Bill Burr fan but was comedy gold in that special: just wow…so sharp. So as 2019 draws to an end we get Seth Meyers: Lobby Baby. It’s a comedy special so I’ll give it 20 minutes; perhaps like Bill Burr he’ll surprise me. Not a Meyers fan though; don’t watch his show. Fun trailer too! (Sammy)

The Wonderful World of Disney Presents The Little Mermaid Live! (8pm / ABC) – Sure this could be a trainwreck and they are also doing a LIVE-action movie as well but here we are getting something a little different with a live musical performance. I get the feeling that this is being used to test the waters on having a POC Ariel. After the stupid backlash earlier this year regarding that decision, I wouldn’t be surprised that was why this got greenlit. Still, the cast is really strong and should provide a well sung and performed version of the Disney story. Plus it’s a great choice for the kids. (Mr. Green)

Wednesday, November 6

Image Makers: The Adventures of America’s Pioneer Cinematographers (9pm / TCM) – One of the issues I have with our movie media coverage is it focuses primarily on actors and directors and granted these are key positions fully responsible for the movie we’ve fallen asleep to late one night on tv. Thing is editors have a pivotal role and cinematographers well they make magic happen! It’s so cool that TCM as part of “the network’s month-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the American Society of Cinematographers” is showing this documentary. If you’re unsure what a cinematographer does or who are good ones (again we’ve only developed our language to debate directors) then this doc should prove helpful. And if you don’t know, now you know… and knowing is half the battle! (Sammy)

WWE NXT (8pm / USA) – Just like RAW this is in case they decide to send some RAW & Smackdown stars to invade NXT to help build toward Survivor Series. This, of course, would make sense which is why I don’t they will do it. However, if they do it will add a much-needed boost to the show and be a cohesive storyline for the company as a whole. But, I would in the wrong if I also didn’t mention that NXT doesn’t really need the help as it continues to be the best of the three shows WWE produces each week. Thank you Triple H. Again if it doesn’t pay off Sammy’s pick again starts 9pm so there is a safety line for you. (Mr. Green)

Thursday, November 7

Conan Without Borders: Ghana (10pm /TBS) – Comedy happens when Conan packs his bags! Conan continues to be one of the more innovative late-night hosts and like Letterman before him, he is creating compelling television. And oddly enough fascinating podcasts. In this episode, Conan talks about this Without Borders special. (Sammy)

Supernatural (8pm / CW) – Okay so I admit I screwed up last week. There was no new Supernatural and that’s my bad. However, it was Halloween and most of you were probably out trick ‘r’ treating, partying or maybe watching horror movies. The show does return this week so we can pick up after the events of the last episode and the many deaths that took place. It really left the show in a weird place for the rest of the season but I like that they decided to end certain storylines early to allow the show to slowly come to its natural conclusion. Plus, based on this so far I get the strong feeling they are building towards a total strip-down of everything that has taken place until we are only left with Sam & Dean like in the first episode of the series. And that would be a fair way to end. (Mr. Green)

Friday, November 8

Green Eggs and Ham (3am / Netflix) – I am Sam I am so…I guess I don’t have a choice and gotta suggest Green Eggs and Ham? The rhyming got away from me at the end there. Bonus? Did you know Dr. Seuss gifted us the word nerd? (Sammy)

Magnum P.I. (9pm / CBS) – Yup that right Magnum. This show was my biggest surprise last season when it premiered and it continues to be. As shlocky and hokey as it can be it is fun, light and breezy to watch. We can’t always be watching shows like Watchmen or Jack Ryan. Sometimes you need a little breather and this show is it. Plus the added bonus that while there is some connective tissue of an overall story it is not required to watch every episode or in order. They are 90% capsule episodes that you can watch in any order. Miss a couple, not a problem at all and that is always a fun thing to have. (Mr. Green)

Saturday, November 9

Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary Celebration (7pm / HBO) – Mr. Rogers has had a powerful renaissance with books, a documentary or two and an upcoming Tom Hanks feature. Our nostalgia and pine for days past isn’t complete without recognizing Sesame Street which is now 50 years old. And you know what let’s get into this. I’ve decided it’s the time and it’s the place: Elmo sucks. I am forever Team Grover (regular or Super). Elmo sucks, let the truth ring out. (Sammy)

Nothing! – So I’ll recommend Sammy’s pick which looks cool. But also here’s your chance to catch up and watch the latest season of whatever show you are behind on or a movie that you have been wanting to watch but just couldn’t find the time. I know I have a few… dozen to pick from. (Mr. Green)

Sunday, November 10

Giants Of Africa (Anytime / Netflix) – This month Netflix debuts Giants Of Africa a 2016 basketball documentary. Toronto Raptors GM Masai Ujiri has set up a basketball youth program in Africa and this is all the fun behind-the-scenes fun. Basketball and of course the NBA are a global game. It hasn’t taken over soccer’s popularity just yet though it’s certainly growing. Initiative and docs like these are why it continues to flourish. (Sammy)

Watchmen (9pm / HBO) – While I was concerned at first I am now a convert. This show has been rock solid so far and I get the feeling that it won’t go away for a while. probably around the time goes to end as most shows can’t stick the landing of what they promise early on. However, for now, I’m enjoying this dark tale of a possible future that we are not that far from today in the real world. (Mr. Green)

Well, there you go plenty of options for the week ahead. Enjoy yourself and watch responsibly.

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
