Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Petula Neale as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

On this week’s Bloodbath, we revisit everybody’s favourite topic: REBOOTS! That is, everyone except Andrew. Much like retcons and event books, reboots are a staple of the comics industry. They are a complicated endeavour when done right and a dumpster fire when handled incorrectly. Of all the types of reboots out there, “Ground Up Reboots” are the hardest to pull off.

What’s a Ground Up Reboot? That’s when you start the character back at zero, throwing away most or all of the previous continuity. We’ve seen it recently with House of X and Buffy The Vampire Slayer. We’ve seen it back in the day with Hawkman. DC and Marvel have done Ground Up Reboots on their entire lines. Crisis on Infinite Earths, The New 52, and the 2015 Secret Wars were all Ground Up Reboots that might as well have been Scorched Earth attempts. The Ultimate Universe at Marvel was an imprint line but it almost replaced the 616 Universe. As previously stated, Ground Up Reboots are just a staple of the business.

Join Andrew and Petula as they look back on the more popular Ground Up Reboots. Some are good. Some are bad. All left their mark on the comics industry. It’s all coming your way on an ALL NEW, ALL DIFFERENT episode of Back Issue Bloodbath.
