Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
POWER RANGERS TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #2 $3.99 (Boom!) – Hey kids! Do you like Ninja Turtles? Do you like Power Rangers? Really?! What if I told you that you could take your Ninja Turtles and your Power Rangers and mash em together in a super-fun comic? Sounds awesome, doesn’t it? Luckily, the comic gods have done just that and you can still get on board while the getting is good. The first instalment found Tommy Oliver infiltrating the Foot Clan for reasons known only to him. This caused him to run afoul of our sewer dwelling pals, the TMNT, which in turn caused the Green Machine to run afoul of the Power Rangers! Classic comic book misunderstanding leading to a team up, ya’ll. This issue, I imagine said team up will occur. Should be most excellent. (Kris)
STAR #1 (OF 5) $3.99 (Marvel) – Hey, remember last year in the Captain Marvel series how that Star character showed up made Carol Danvers’s life a living hell? Remember how Carol had to rip the Reality Stone right out of Star’s chest to beat her? Well, she got better. Now, after breaking out of the Raft, Star’s trying to figure out how this whole villain thing actually works. She’s also still working out her bond with the Reality Stone. Star has lots to work out in this new series from Kelly Thompson. Let’s see if she gets the hang of it! (Andrew)
DAPHNE BYRNE #1 (OF 6) $3.99 (DC Comics) – In 19th century London, young Daphne Byrne has suffered the sudden death of her father. Sadly, the 14-year-old may soon lose her grief-stricken mother as well if Daphne is unable to extricate her from the clutches of a group of occultists. Unfortunately, that task is made infinitely more difficult when Daphne notices a supernatural presence inside her own body. A presence with wants and appetites completely divorced from her own. This book sounds creepy as fuck, which is what your want in your horror. And you know what else you want? A quality writer like Laura Marks of Ray Donovan and The Expanse fame, and a freakin’ legendary horror artist in the form of Kelley Jones putting the book tighter. It’s all right here. Take. It. (Kris)
DYING IS EASY #2 (OF 5) $3.99 (IDW) – Being funny ain’t easy. Neither is proving you didn’t kill a guy when you’re the prime suspect. This is the situation Syd “Shit Talk” Holmes finds himself. He has to use his ex-cop abilities to get to the bottom of this or he’ll be doing the time for joke-stealer Carl Dixon’s murder. He’s on the trail and has a few suspects of his own. Let’s see if he can stay one step ahead of the lawman and one punchline away from a laugh. (Andrew)
X-FORCE #5 $3.99 (Marvel) – Wow! The end of last issue was fuuuuucked uuuuup! Seriously, that was the most graphic shit I’ve seen in a mainstream superhero comic since the last time Wolverine got ripped in half. Welp, I guess old Gold Balls and the Bring Back Bunch will be putting in some overtime this week, huh? I also reckon when they do put Wolvie’s trunk back on his stump and grow a whole new Kid Omega with a still-attached head, those two motherfuckers are gonna be piiiiiiiiissed. Humanity messed up. That’s where I’m at on this one. (Kris)
WHITE ASH #1 $3.99 (Scout) – “When you’re a miner, you’re a miner 4 Life!” No, that’s not it. “When you’re a miner, you’re a miner all the way! From your first cigarette to your last dying day!” No, that’s not the saying either. Oh, here we go, I got it now. “When you live in White Ash and don’t want to be a miner, you have to dig up some dirt on the town that links your family to an ancient evil that has just returned. But when you do, you have to stick around to protect folks from said evil.” That’s how the saying goes, right? (Andrew)
YONDU #4 (OF 5) $3.99 (Marvel) – Yondu and Yondu fly around in Yondu’s ship and continue on their quest to do Yondu things. Also, for the first time ever, the secret origin of Yondu is revealed! Which Yondu? Why, the Yondu we’ve been reading about in this book called Yondu, of course! That Yondu, silly! (Kris)
GO WITH THE FLOW GN $14.99 (First Second) – Four friends in high school band together to fight “the man” when they notice that the boys’ football team has new uniforms and equipment yet there’s still no feminine hygiene products in the girls’ bathroom. The young women petition, write letters and make some noise. They even take the fight to the streets…..well, whatever the high school equivalent to that is, they do that! A coming of age story that captures the rough terrain of freshman year. First second puts out top notch materials and this looks to be par for the course. (Andrew)
THE CLOCK #1 $3.99 (Image) – An aggressive cancer, seemingly spread via a viral component, sweeps across the globe in a terrifyingly short amount of time and wipes out vast swathes of humanity. After weeks of study, and terrible personal loss, a cancer researcher posits that half the world will be dead within a year if something isn’t done. But what can be done, exactly? A bio-thriller for our time, The Clock looks to satisfy that same pulse-pounding itch that Outbreak and Contagion took care of back in the day. Pick up a copy for a unique comic reading experience this Wednesday. (Kris)
AMAZING MARY JANE #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – You just can’t keep Mary Jane down. Not even if she’s starring in a film about Mysterio (directed by Mysterio) and the set is constantly getting attacked by super villains. Even if the actor playing Spider-Man up and quits, you just can’t keep her down. She’s gonna take those lemons and make lemonade…….or take spiders and make a spider web? I don’t know where that analogy was going but we’re past that now. Mary Jane’s got a plan on who can replace the quitter. It’s not who you think it is. The show must go on and there’s nothing the Savage Six can do to stop it. That’s Hollywood for ya. (Andrew)
