Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
OUTLAWED #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Teen superheroes are no longer allowed to superhero by order of the people that make those types of decisions! What does it all mean for Ms. Marvel, Nova, Miles Morales, Amadeus Cho, and co? Well, it means they will continue to superhero and be branded… OUTLAWS! Dun dun DUUUUUUN! (Kris)
MONEY SHOT TP $17.99 (Vault) – You’ve heard me praise this series. I’ve promoted it here and on my Ten Best Comics of 2019 list. Now you can get the whole story in one handy, dandy trade. Then you can see scientists give handies to alien life in the name of science! What? Yes, this is the story of Christine Ocampo, inventor of the Star Shot Teleportation device. Her mission is space exploration. Her funding comes from the people of earth who are tired of their porn options. She and her crew of scientists must seek out new civilizations and new life forms and fuck them. It’s all in the name of science and money and it’s hilarious. Check it out! (Andrew)
POWER RANGERS TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #4 $3.99 (Boom!) – This has been a very fun series with some beautiful artwork and very large, very cool dollops of fan service (in a good way!). This issue looks to be no different with the introduction of the Ninja Rangers and Power Turtles… or something. Yes, somehow there will be some sort of full-on cross pollination between the Rangers and the TMNT resulting in super-sweet, mega-powered mash-ups. Totally necessary to face a freshly juiced up Shredder. Much butt-kicking shall ensue. (Kris)
JIA & THE NIAN MONSTER TP $12.99 (Dark Horse) – Another great graphic novel based on an ancient Chinese legend! Jia and the Nian Monster is a story of courage. One girl saves her village from the angry Nian Monster by challenging the status quo and showing no fear. It’s a classic tale of coming of age adventure for all ages! It’s also a personal story of loss and revenge. Fun little read that’s worth your time. (Andrew)
ARTEMIS & ASSASSIN #1 $4.99 (Aftershock) – A time-travelling assassin is sent back to 1944 with one purpose only: Kill Virginia Hall! Take out one woman? Should be a piece of cake for a killer from the freakin’ future! Or, at least it would be if Virginia Hall wasn’t the deadliest spy in WWII. But she was. Sooooo, this spy? Maya? She’s gonna have a tough time. (Kris)
ROBIN 80TH ANNIVERSARY 100 PAGE SUPER SPECTACULAR #1 $9.99 (DC Comics) – There are three constants in life. We’re all going to die at some point. We all have to pay taxes. Batman will continue to dress young boys and girls in Robin costumes and put them in danger! The Robin 80th Anniversary special celebrates the last one. All the Robins get some love here, even the one that fans voted to die. Pick up the issue and see if any Robins get offed again. Should be fun. (Andrew)
X-RAY ROBOT #1 (OF 4) $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Mike Allred and Laura Allred return to Dark Horse to bring you the most Alreddy Allred book that ever Allredded. An X-Ray Robot from 277 years in the future travels back in time to team up with his 100% human and not at all robotic past self in an effort to thwart a nihilistic being from another dimension that wants to return all of reality to its pre-Big Bang State. See? Told you it was Allreddy AF. (Kris)
MARVELS 25TH ANNIVERSARY HC $50.00 (Marvel) – It’s been 25 years since the release of one of the greatest mini series of all time! To celebrate, Marvel has released an anniversary hard cover of the series written by Kurt Busiek and painted by Alex Ross. The greatest moments of Marvel’s Silver Age through the eyes of an aging photographer. If you’ve never read Marvels, you have to check out this love letter to comics. It is an age of wonders. It is an age of Marvels! (Andrew)
STARSHIP DOWN #1 (OF 4) $3.99 (Dark Horse) – An extraterrestrial ship is discovered to have been buried under the ice for thousands of years in the frigid wastelands of Siberia. A cultural anthropologist is tasked to figure out how the thing got there, what it was doing there, and how much it has to do with the evolution of mankind before the dumb dumbs in the peanut gallery tear the world apart with speculation. (Kris)
SUPERMAN TP VOL 02: THE UNITY SAGA HOUSE OF EL $19.99 (DC Comics) – I’ve said it here and I’ve said it on my comic book podcast, Back Issue Bloodbath, this is a great time to be a Bendis fan. It’s also a great time to be a Superman fan. The Unity Saga is one of the best Supes stories of the modern era. In this chapter, we find out how things went for Jonathan on his space trip with Grandpa Jor-El. Spoiler: It did not go well. Plus, it’s the final showdown between the House of El and Rogol Zaar, a.k.a. the baddest baddie Superman has ever faced! If you’re looking for a comic to renew your faith in people doing the right thing, you need to read this comic. It’s good times. (Andrew)
