Hey not sure what to watch this week on the small screen? No worries #SetTheVCR is here to help you make some of those decisions easier. Each week Sammy Younan and I will give you our picks for each day of the coming week. Please note – enjoyment NOT guaranteed.

All times are Eastern Standard Time so please adjust for your time zone.

Oh, man! The Clone Wars finale was something else! And I finally finished watching the last season of Schitt’s Creek this week as well. Such great TV out there if you just keep looking. Plus we now have for the Star Wars fan like myself the new Disney Gallery series about The Mandalorian airing which is great so far. I love TV!

We got Happy Days and Perfect Dudes. We got The Flash and we got trials and murder. This is either #SetTheVCR or one strange week. Either way, you will not be bored.

Dude Perfect: Backstage Pass (3am / YouTube Originals) – At first I wasn’t going to click on something called “Dude Perfect.” I don’t drink Mountain Dew and I don’t use the word bro. However, I am a dude so here we are. This is the Jack Ass version of basketball. You know, those crazy trick-shots where all the bros explode in joy at the sight of a made basket? This is them. I’d be curious to see if they finally reveal how many takes it takes to make those shots. (Sammy)

Trial by Media (3am / Netflix) – From Executive Producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov, six televised cases defined by headlines reaching across different areas of the law including the unforgettable Jenny Jones made-for-Court TV murder trials, the sensational story of Rod Blagojevich’s political fall, and the case of Amadou Diallo, an unarmed African immigrant who was shot 41 times by police in New York City. This is the kind of programming that really seems to work over at Netflix. They have previous success with Central Park 5 and Tiger King stories this looks to fit right in and offer some interesting critiques on how we as consumers of media react and relate to these stories as told to us by the press or in many cases savvy pr firms working behind the scenes. Sadly the people who need to watch these the most won’t and those who don’t need further educating will most likely be the only ones who do. (Mr. Green)

The Happy Days of Garry Marshall (8pm /ABC) – We lost Garry Marshall on July 19, 2016. However before he departed he left us with an outstanding body of work as a producer: Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Mork & Mindy so much more goodness and as a director he gifted us Pretty Woman, Dear God, Beaches and other movies that make us cry and feel sensitive. Tonight’s special is a tribute to the man and to his work. What a run, eh? (Sammy)

Mr. Green’s Pick of the Week

The Flash (8pm / CW)SEASON FINALE! This is my catchup week on the show as I have been super busy working during its return to air. Unlike Arrow early this year, The Flash has been consistently been able to keep my attention. Partly because of the cast, especially Grant Gustin who is perfect as Barry but the tone of the series as it has gone over the years. Knowing how to mix comedy and drama infinitely better than Arrow ever could making it a much more enjoyable watch than it’s dour cousin. Barry has a plan to save Iris but as always with these shows it’s risky… spoiler he will. It still doesn’t change my love of the show though. Another fun season of The Flash is in the books. (Mr. Green)

Wednesday, May 13

The Wrong Missy (3 am / Netflix) – It’s a David Spade Netflix movie produced by Adam Sandler. With Vanilla Ice. I suspect the current stay at home orders will give this a solid guilty pleasure ratings spike. Oh as for the plot…such as it is: “a man who invites the woman he loves to accompany him on a trip to Hawaii, only to discover that he accidentally invited another woman with the same name.” Yup. It is what it is. Oh I’m so gonna watch. (Sammy)

Motherland: Fort Salem (9pm / Freeform) – After checking it out for our interview with one it stars Kai Bradbury I’m hooked on this show. It’s way better than I first gave it credit for and continues to impress me with each episode. This week marks the penultimate episode of the series as we and the witches of Fort Salem march toward the season finale. New truths and alliances are revealed and discord grows amongst the troops. I really how this gets a second season. (Mr. Green)

Magic For Humans (Anytime / Netflix) – One of my favourite Netflix tv shows returns for a third season on Friday! So why not use today to catch up on seasons 1 and 2? The premise is simple and wonderful: comedian and magician Justin Willman performs magic tricks for people on the street. You think you’ve seen before right? You think you know where this going right? Let this show surprise and delight you; inject some wonder back into your life. (Sammy)

How to Get Away With Murder (10pm / ABC)SERIES FINALE! This was a show that I watched the first few episodes on and that was it. I realized as good as the show was in it’s acting and storylines it just wasn’t for me personally. As not the biggest murderino around that type of story only goes so far and I much prefer it in shorter form storytelling. Regardless, this show has had millions of fans since that first episode that only grew as it went along. To be honest with Viola Davies as your lead it’s hard to not see why anyone would want to watch. This marks its final time airing on TV and hopefully for those who are avid fans of the series it manages to nail it’s landing, unlike most fan-favourite TV shows. (Mr. Green)

Magic For Humans (3am / Netflix)SEASON PREMIERE! It’s back!! Yes! This is one of my all-time bestest most favourite most special Top Dog #1 Netflix tv show. It’s got comedy and it’s got magic and it’s got discovery as Justin Willman learns what it means to be…human. You know what it doesn’t have? Camera or editing tricks because that is not magic. So…how is he doing what he’s doing? Or a better question: why is he doing what he is doing? (Sammy)

White Lines (3am / Netflix) – This sounds like it’s going to be some good old fashion murdery fun. When the body of a legendary Manchester DJ is discovered twenty years after his mysterious disappearance from Ibiza, his sister returns to the beautiful Spanish island to find out what happened. Her investigation will lead her through a thrilling world of dance clubs, lies and cover-ups, forcing her to confront the darker sides of her own character in a place where people live life on the edge. There are many great British actors in this that I can’t wait to check it out. Plus it might give me some good ideas on how to deal with Sammy after his next pick. (Mr. Green)

Saturday, May 16

Joker (8pm / HBO) – “Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight? I ask that of all my prey. I just like the sound of it.” Why so serious? What will Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker contribution be? Now that the movie is beamed into homes we shall soon find out. (Sammy)

Car Masters: Rust to Riches (Anytime / Netflix) – I have never been a huge fan of “reality TV” because of how fake and staged most of it is. However, this show doesn’t live on manufactured personal conflicts but instead on the one that comes from deadlines and trying to make a business work. I’ve come to really dig this show and its crew of characters from the owner Mark all the way down to Caveman. I also like that Constance is treated with respect in the shop for her ability with engines instead of just pandering to her looks. All of the members of the shop have strong voices and skills that are on display in every episode of the show. Sure they clown around at times but when they are working they really work hard to get things done… even Shawn. This show continues to be an enjoyable fun ride through the creation of each vehicle they work on. Hopefully, with the Covid-19 lockdown, they manage to survive it and come back just as strong in another season in the future. (Mr. Green)

Sammy’s Pick of the Week

The Last Dance (9pm / ESPN) – It’s…all over. I need a minute. I promised myself I wasn’t gonna cry. Episode 9 and 10 conclude The Last Dance. I’m sorry. I… yeah. Mr. Green take over I can’t find the words right now. (Sammy)

Bob’s Burgers (9pm / FOX)SEASON FINALE! I got you, Sammy. Another season of a great show is now in the can. Annnnnnddd the really long wait until another season happens like with many other shows on there. I’m happy that many were either already done or close to done, they were able to finish up the seasons. However, when shows that I really like such as this one it hurts to think how long I will have to wait until a new episode will be ready to air. So I will enjoy this while I can and of course go back and rewatch the previous seasons in the meantime. (Mr. Green)

Well, there you go plenty of options for the week ahead. Enjoy yourself and watch responsibly.

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
