Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Petula Neale as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
This week on Bloodbath, we’re talking about one of Andrew’s favourite series from the past 10 years: Avengers Academy! Written by Christos Gage with art by Mike Mckone, Jorge Molina, Tom Raney, Sean Chen and more, Avengers Academy was one of four Avengers titles to launch in the summer of 2010. Dubbed The Heroic Age, the period was to usher in a brighter time in Marvel continuity. The late 2000s were filled with doom and gloom. Civil War, World War Hulk, Secret Invasion and The Siege were all pretty bleak. The Heroic Age was set to shine a light on sunnier times for The Avengers. I guess Gage and company didn’t get the memo!
Avengers Academy was a smart title that married the best qualities of the Avengers (big adventure and world level threats) with the best qualities of the X-Men (dark origins and coming of age tales). Six powered teenagers that were experimented on by Norman Osborn during his Dark Reign are brought to Avengers Infinite Mansion to be trained as the next Avengers. We meet Hazmat, Mettle, Reptle, Striker, Veil and Finess. Their instructors are all Avengers looking for redemption. Hank Pym leads the team with Tigra, Speedball, Quicksilver, Jocasta and Justice. It’s a ragtag group of heroes: the perfect combination of characters for tension and conflict.
Join Andrew and Petula as they look back on the first 13 issue of Avengers Academy. Andrew loves this comic. Petula never heard of it before this. Each brings an interesting take on the series. Andrew also laments the end of the 39 issue run in 2013. Listen and find out more about this short lived superteam and its characters. It’s a fun series and fun conversation. Enjoy.
