Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Petula Neale as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
Back near the beginning of 2019, DC Comics released the first issue of a new Martian Manhunter series written by Steve Orlando with art by Riley Rossmo and colours by Ivan Plascencia. It was a retelling of the origin of one of DC’s beloved characters and Justice League mainstays. Now, a year later, the complete series is available in trade paperback and is more relevant now than it was when it came out. This week on Bloodbath, we take a look at Martian Manhunter: Identity.
This new origin reveals a new wrinkle in the life of J’onn J’onzz. Back on Mars, J’onn was the dirtiest cop around, justifying his actions with his badge. But when a global pandemic corrupts the minds of the entire Martian race with fire, J’onn is transported to Earth by accident. There, he gets a second chance he doesn’t want or deserve. Under the identity of deceased police detective John Jones, he becomes the man he always should have been.
Join Andrew and Petula as they take a look at Martian Manhunter: Identity and marvel at the timely relevance of the series in our current social climate. They also talk about the amazing artwork by Rossmo and the dynamic colours by Plascencia. All in a days work for Back Issue Bloodbath. Enjoy.
