Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
NEGAN LIVES #1 $4.99 (Image) – The Walking Dead is over. But Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard are diving back into the world of the Walkers with this special one-shot with the intent to help out physical comic shops in the wake of the pandemic. Yes, in an effort to get folks back into brick and mortars, Big Robbie Kirks will be giving us some insight into just what one of the biggest pieces of shit in the history of comics has been up to since his last appearance in WD #174. The most beautiful thing about this story? It’ll only be available as a physical, printed up and smelling like new, honest to goodness book. So go. Go to your LCS on Wednesday, stand 6 feet from the friendly proprietor and give them cash money for this very comic. Or maybe use plastic. Keep that fomite transfer down, yeah? (Kris)
NIGHTWING: YEAR ONE DELUXE ED HC $29.99 (DC Comics) – One of the greatest characters to evolve right before readers eyes over decades of well crafts stories has to be Dick Grayson. The evolution from Robin to Nightwing is a prime of example of this. But it wasn’t like he just flipped a switch and became Nightwing. Here’s a great story by Chuck Dixon and Scott Beatty that shows the journey from pixie boots to feathered shoulders. Stay tuned for a new episode of Back Issue Bloodbath on this very story in a few weeks time! (Andrew)
THE GODDAMNED: VIRGIN BRIDES #1 (OF 5) $3.99 (Image) – If you’ve not read the biblical-grindhouse series the Goddamned by Scalped duo Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera, stop reading this column immediately. Pick up a copy of the trade, read that shit, and then come on back here. I. Will. Wait. Back? Awesome, right? While the first book in the Goddamned saga followed Cain as he ran afoul of Noah, this new series takes an entirely different tact. Still set before the Flood, Aaron and Guera take us to a moutaintop nunnery nestled within a new Eden. The Holy Sisters prepare orphan girls to become Brides of the Sons of God. Who are the Sons of God? What happens when two orphans figure out the horrible truth about their intended future? I have some ideas. They’re all horrible. I’m sure whatever Aaron and Guera have in mind will be worse. (Kris)
DUEL IDENTITY #1 $3.99 (Red Giant) – Artemis is the worlds greatest assassin and superhuman secret agent. But then her cover gets blown. What is an agent to do? Scrambled Eggs all over her face! The smart move is to transition into the world’s first super heroine! She becomes Andromeda. Easy right? Maybe not. This new series has pretty pictures and an intriguing hook. Definitely worth a look. Special thanks to the Fraiser theme song for this description. (Andrew)
GHOSTBUSTERS YEAR ONE #4 (OF 4) $3.99 (IDW) – Finally! The Egon Spengler issue is here! When I was a kid, I loved Venkman. He was, by far, my favourite Ghostbuster. Bill Murray was great in the role and his performance is one that holds up to this day. As I grew older and watched the film dozens of times, I began to appreciate the layers that Harold Ramis gave Egon, and the deadpan humour that he brought to every scene. I still love me some Venkman. But Egon Spengler is a ‘Buster after my own heart. This is why I’m thrilled that he’s finally getting the spotlight in the latest and final instalment of the Year One series. What secrets will this tale contain? I’m not sure, but I personally would like to learn more about his collection of spores, moulds and fungus. (Kris)
BIX GN $29.99 (Gallery) – Scott Chandler brings us a near wordless graphic novel on Leon “Bix” Beiderbecke, one of the most innovative jazz soloists of the 1920s! There are no words to express his amazing music. But there are beautiful illustrations that tell his life story, from the rapid rise to the tragic fall. An amazing piece of work. (Andrew)
ALL-AMERICA COMIX ONE-SHOT $3.99 (Image) – Joe Casey created America Chavez for Marvel alongside Nick Dragotta back in 2011. Since then, he moved on to other things. Several other writers took at a crack at America, taking her down many interesting paths. Paths that were, let’s say, different than what Casey had originally intended. That is, as they say, the breaks when creating new characters for a large corporation that will inevitably do whatever they damn well please. Or so it normally goes. But this is Joe Casey. He does weird shit sometimes. This time? He’s created a new character that he owns completely named America Vasquez. She is totally not America Chavez, despite sharing the same looks, powers, background, and general personality. Nope. Not the same character at all. What will America get up to? Probably not whatever Casey had originally planned for America Chavez. Again, totally different characters. (Kris)
JIM HENSON’S THE STORYTELLER: GHOSTS #3 (OF 4) $3.99 (Boom!) – If you listened to Geek Hard last Friday, you heard comic creator Michael Walsh mention his issue of Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Ghosts. Michael wrote and illustrated the issue. He said it was set to come out in August. He was wrong! The issue hits your Local Comic Shop this Wednesday. It’s a new take on the classic Banshee myth. Storyteller tales are always fun and Michael knows he’s way around creepy stories. The wail of the Banshee will entertain ya! (Andrew)
A WALK THROUGH HELL COMPLETE HC $39.99 (Aftershock) – I’ve talked a number of times in this very column about how much I enjoyed this modern horror tale from Garth Ennis and Goran Sudzuka. I’m not sure there is much to add at this point other than this: Hey. Aftershock has collected this story of two cops walking through the doors of a derelict warehouse and (literally… possibly? Maybe?) into their own personal Hells. It’s a hardcover. It’s pretty. Check it out, okay? (Kris)
DEVIL’S HIGHWAY #1 $3.99 (AWA) – What starts as a rip-roaring tale of revenge leads to a greater conspiracy! A woman tracks the serial killer that murdered her father only to find he’s just one small part of a larger network! A network that’s spread throughout the country! It’s a network of evil all over this land. (Kinda like the real world, right?) In order to catch the devil she’s gotta embrace her own dark secrets. Creepy. Benjamin Percy and Brent Schoonover are cooking up something interesting. Take a trip down the Devil’s Highway this Wednesday and find out if you can smell what they’re cooking! (Andrew)
