Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
THOR #7 $3.99 (Marvel) – With all that’s transpired in this new Thor series, the titular God of Thunder is having a really tough time lifting Mjolnir. Is he no longer worthy or is there something else at play? While this particular issue has been building for some time, Mjolnir sure has picked a terrible time to get all pissy and press it’s point as comic threats beyond imagining are pretty much on Thor’s front doorstep. (Kris)
STILLWATER #1 $3.99 (Image) – Image comics has a great track record in recent years for producing quality new series after quality new series. Oh look, here comes another one now! In the town of Stillwater, nobody ever dies. Even if they want to….or if someone else wants them to! It’s a new horror comic with an all star creative team: Chip Zdarsky and Ramon K. Perez. They’re fantastic creators from Geek Hard’s home turf. That makes them twice as good in our books! So check their book. (Andrew)
FLOWER OF THE WITCH TP $14.99 (Dark Horse) – Italian cartoonist Enrico Orlandi’s debut graphic novel hits comic shelves this week with this brand new English language edition from the folks at Dark Horse. A coming of age tale. A young hero exiled until he becomes a man. Does that mean chopping the heads off a few dragons? Rescuing a few damsels, preferably in distress? Kicking some monsters in the teeth? Or, maybe, just maybe, violence isn’t always the answer. He better figure it out quickly, because his actions have set a demon on a course to devour an entire village. That would be shitty to have on one’s conscience, y’know? (Kris)
FEARLESS DAWN MEETS HELLBOY ONE SHOT $3.99 (Albatross) – If you like your pulp heroes fighting zombie German soldiers in Romania, you’ll love this new one-shot story. Mike Mignola and Steve Mannion team up to tell this racy action tale. Their greatest creations, the popular Hellboy and the underground sensation Fearless Dawn, are locked in battle with the 666th Panzer Division. A lot of fun is waiting for you in this handy, dandy one-shot. (Andrew)
X-MEN GRAND DESIGN OMNIBUS HC $100.00 (Marvel) – Ed Piskor’s masterclass in cartooning chronicling the entire history of the X-Men from inception to present day collected in a swank new hardcover for all of us to enjoy! Well, maybe not all of us. But those of us that have 100 beans to spare in their pocket and a deep love of the X-Men. Those people? Man. They are gonna enjoy the fuuuuck outta this thing. (Kris)
YOU LOOK LIKE DEATH: TALES OF THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY #1 (OF 6) $3.99 (Dark Horse) – It was bound to happen. The Umbrella Academy was beggin’ for a spinoff series! And Seance is the lucky winner of said series. Looking back to the past, we see Klaus kicked out of the Academy at age 18 and cut off from Hargreeves’ fortune. What follows is a prodigal son tale fuelled by drugs, vampires and trickery. Exactly what you’d expect from a Seance Spinoff and what you want. (Andrew)
SUNEATER #1 (OF 5) $4.99 (Heavy Metal) – In this new series conceived and written by Dylan Sprouse, 9th century Viking warrior and drug addict Kveldulf Bjalfisson chops off his own leg and offers it to the gods in order to be granted the power to destroy his enemies. The gods oblige and bind him with a monstrous beast that will wreak the bloody havoc Kveldulf desires, but at a cost he does not truly comprehend. Illustrated by Diego Yapur and published by Heavy Metal, Suneater should be a glorious orgy of violence, mayhem, and intense introspection. Give it a whirl on Wednesday. (Kris)
SPIDER-MAN: SPIDER-VERSE GN TP SPIDER-WOMEN $9.99 (Marvel) – There’s only been a couple of Spider-Men in the 616 Universe. But there’s been a fucktonne of Spider-Women. And all of them have been pretty awesome. Jessica Drew. Silk. May “Mayday” Parker. Even Annie. This trade collects all of their first appearances in one place. And all for just 10 bucks? Score! (Andrew)
TENACIOUS D POST APOCALYPTO HC $29.99 (Fantagraphics) – This isn’t the greatest book in the world. This is just a tribute. The D have arrived in comic book form and Jables and Kage are looking to melt our faces with graphic excellence. Written by Kyle Gass and illustrated by Jack Black, Post Apocalypto continues the cross-media onslaught that the band began with the post-Apocalypto movie and followed up with the post apocalyto album. In this new graphic novel, the boys have survived an atomic explosion and now find themselves struggling to survive in a scorched hellscape. Luckily, they have the power of rock to see them through. What adventures will the D find themselves at the end of all there is? Pick up the book to find out! (Kris)
MONEY SHOT #8 $3.99 (Vault) – The XXXplorers come to a planet where scientists are treated like rockstars. Sounds like a dream for them. Unfortunately, they had to bring their dumbass President along for the ride. Their dumbass President who thinks science is stupid and will do nothing but embarrass them for the entire trip. So basically exactly what scientists in the U.S. have to go through on a regular basis, just on an intergalactic level and involving some sex. Sounds like Money Shot continues to maintain its relevance. Pick it up this Wednesday! (Andrew)
