Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
WALKING DEAD DLX #1 $3.99 (Image) – It’s the same great Walking Dead #1 you remember, now with that great deluxe flavour! Just what the hell does that mean? Well in this particular case it means that this sucker is fully colourized care of Dave McCaig! In addition to all of that beauteous colourfication, the issue will also contain Robert Kirkman’s original handwritten plots and fresh new commentary. Should be a grand ole flesh-eating time for all the Walking Dead fans out there. (Kris)
LEGEND OF THE SWAMP THING: HALLOWEEN SPECTACULAR #1 $.5.99 (DC Comics) – It’s officially October when the creepy and spooky comics make their way to the shelves. This one’s a special treat as a plethora of great creators come together to tell some haunting stories from the past lives of the Guardian of the Green! These ghastly tales stretch all the way back to ancient Rome! Light your jack-o’-lantern and snuggle up to it to read through this batch of scary stories! (Andrew)
WOLVERINE #6 $3.99 (Marvel) – X of Swords rolls into the realm of the ol’ Canucklehead this week, and with it, a promise of some Muramasa goodness. While I was not all that high on Daniel Way’s Wolverine run, the Muramasa blades and the lore behind them were definitely solid additions to the life and times of the man they call Logan. As such, I welcome this new tale which once again brings both blades to the fore, and, with them, yet another opportunity for Wolvie to play the bad ass samurai. (Kris)
MONEY SHOT #9 $3.99 (Vault) – Not all the comics you read this week have to be scary or bloody. You can break up the doom and gloom with some sexy science in space! The XXX-plorers and that tool President Kirk are on the run from pissed off Space Knights. Their only hope might be to team up with them and film a sex scene that will send them out of this world literally. This series continues to be the funniest adult book on the comic racks. Read it for sexy fun times! (Andrew)
STAIRWAY ANTHOLOGY TP $14.99 (Image) – Hard sci-fi in comics has always seemed like a hard sell. That’s why I feel that when a big publisher takes a shot on something like the Stairway Anthology, it should be supported. Promising to explore Genetic manipulation, paradox, alternative histories, and much more, creators Simon Birks, Carlos Giffoni, Joseph A. Michael, Mark, Alberto Jimenez Alburquerque, Andrea Mutti, Atilio Rojo, Donny Tran, Eva Cabrera, and others will attempt to challenge and delight us throughout this hefty tome. Pick it up this Wednesday and hopefully we can see more of its ilk hit the shelves. (Kris)
HOTELL TP $9.99 (AWA) – On dark desert highway….or route 66….you might come across a battered little inn called The Pierrot Courts Hotel. If you’re tired or weary or just plain desperate, you might make the mistake of staying there. Like the shitty Eagles song says, “you can check out any time you want, but you can never leave!” Pick up this comic trade collecting all the issues of Hotell and see why this is a place you do not want to find yourself. (Andrew)
AMERICAN VAMPIRE 1976 #1 $3.99 (DC Comics) – The end of Skinner Sweet has arrived! In this 1st instalment of a 9-issue series, Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque reunite to spin the final(?) tale of the American Vampire. When the story begins, we find Skinner doing his best Evel Knieval impression outside of Vegas. Cal and Travis are dealing with a killer in New York. And the Gray Trader is up to some evil shit in the bowels of the earth. Pick this book up for the kick ass supernatural action. Stay for the sociopolitical parallels between the mid-70s and the shitshow we’re in the midst of right now! FUN FUN FUN! (Kris)
GETTING IT TOGETHER #1 (OF 4) (Image) – It’s a tough situation when your sister and your best friend are dating. It gets more complicated when one decides they should be in an open relationship and the other is not ready for it. Any way you slice, you’re gonna be stuck in the middle of things. That’s how it is for Jack who lives with his sister, Lauren, who’s dating his best friend, Sam. Well, I think they’re still dating. These kids move so fast. Don’t let the drama train get away from you! Pick up this comic and stay in the loop. (Andrew)
MISTER MIRACLE DLX ED HC $49.99 (DC Comics) – Darkseid is, ya’ll. The Tom King and Mitch Gerard masterpiece is collected in this single beautiful hardcover full of scripts, sketches, and the pencil art for the entire first issue. Relive this tale that dives deep into what makes Scott Free tick. Watch as he attempts his greatest escape ever: from death itself! Is he nuts? Straight up suicidal? Or is it something beyond even that? If you’ve not read the story before, I highly recommend you pick this lovely beast up. If you have read it before, you need this definitive version to revisit whenever the mood strikes. Because, friends, it will strike often. (Kris)
BLACK WIDOW #2 $3.99 (Marvel) – Ok kids, if you read this column before, you know I love Black Widow. And if you don’t know, now you know. I’ve read so many Black Widow comics, I thought I’d seen it all. But issue one of this series really surprised me. We’re going down a road less traveled for Natasha. Has the Widow left the game for a new life or has she forgotten her old one? Hawkeye and Bucky, a.k.a. The Super Spy Ex-boyfriends (not their official team name but I think they’re workshopping it) want to find out the answer to that very question. Arcade is also involved. He’s a creepy little bastard. Lot of great stuff here to play with. Can’t wait to see where Kelly Thompson and Elena Casagrande take the Widow next! (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
