Comic book fandom casts a wide net when it comes to the average reader. The comics medium has attracted fans of different races, genders, sexual orientation and class. But it doesn’t stop there. Comics also have fans in various occupations. Filmmakers, television writers, musicians, athletes and authors read comics. Some of these Celebrities have even written a comic or two! This week on Bloodbath, we look at Celebrity Comic Creators!
Back in 1998, Marvel Knights used the name recognition of filmmaker Kevin Smith to launch their imprint and new Daredevil comic. This is when the idea of the Celebrity comic writer was born. Before this, many a writer from other mediums played in the comic book sandbox. But now marketing steps in and uses their day jobs to sell their funny books! Since then, many celebrities of varying note have made the foray into comics. Patton Oswalt, Joss Whedon, Rosario Dawson, Rashida Jones, CM Punk, and Gerard Way have all had successes. Others, such as Jon Favreau and John Cleese, didn’t have the same luck.
Join Andrew and Petula as they look at the many celebrities who have tried their hand at comics! They also discuss when Celebrity Comic Creators use their name to sell a book they had nothing really to do with. It’s all coming your way on the latest Back Issue Bloodbath. Enjoy!
