Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Petula Neale as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
This week on Back Issue Bloodbath, we take a look at a fancomic that started as a one page web comic and turned into a successful kickstarter project. Stephanie Williams is a freelance writer for various web publications including SYFYFANGRRLS. She’s also the creator and writer of a webcomic called But What If Though?, a take on the Marvel’s What If? comic mixing in DC Comics, fantasy, and sci-fi characters. This was the birthplace of the comic we’re talking about on this episode: Living Heroes.
A mash up of Marvel Comics and the 90s Fox sitcom Living Single, Living Heroes stars Storm, Misty Knight, Monica Rambeau and She-Hulk, living together in a New York Apartment. The book is pure comic parody with a joke-per-page rate that’s off the charts. The fun isn’t lost if you don’t know about Marvel or Living Single. But if you do, the comedy is enhanced tenfold! And the artwork by O’Neill Jones looks like it would be right at home on Adult Swim.
Petula named this book as one of the Best Comics of 2020! Listen as she and Andrew talk about the comic and the television series that inspired it. Strap in for a fun ride. It’s all coming your way on a brand spankin’ new episode of Back Issue Bloodbath.
