Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
SINISTER WAR #1 (OF 4) $4.99 (Marvel) – Doc Ock has put together a fresh, new Sinister Six with the aim of knocking Spidey’s head off. The Vulture has put together a group of villains he calls the Savage Six… also with the aim of knocking Spidey’s head off. But Spidey only has one head! … CIVIL WAR!! I mean SINISTER WAR!! (Kris)
THE SILVER COIN #4 $3.99 (Image) – Michael Walsh gave the perfect description for any issue of The Silver Coin. “Someone finds the coin and then something bad happens.” Straight to the point. I like it. For those who want more, the issue takes place in the future! 2467 to be precise. Written by Jeff Lemire, we follow a scavenger who finds the coin. Then…..something bad happens! (Andrew)
THOR #15 $3.99 (Marvel) – It’s a new arc, and, if the title of “Revelations” is any indication, it should be full of big time secrets getting blown wide open. After spending a whole bunch of time drinking and fighting in bars all the way out in the ass-end of space, All-Father Odin has returned to the realm of Asgard and his throne. But Thor has already been conferred the title and powers of the All-Father and sits upon Asgard’s throne as king. So, uh, Odin is probably gonna just step aside and let Thor do his king thing, right? ‘Cause that’s totally a thing the even-tempered and not at all constantly furious Odin would do, right? … Right? (Kris)
MY OWN WORLD GN $12.99 (First Second) – Nathan is a lonely kid. His sisters don’t like him and he never gets to spend time with his older brother. To pass the time, he creates imaginary places for him to have fun. But one day he comes upon a hidden portal that can take him to a place all his own. Will he be happy in his new world? Or will he be more lonely than before? Check out this Graphic Novel by Mike Holmes. (Andrew)
THE JOKER #5 $5.99 (DC Comics) – If you’re a fan of The Joker and the lore surrounding the character, this issue is a must-buy come Wednesday. Why? Because for the first time ever, DC will be detailing just what went down on the Joker’s first night in Arkham Asylum. Jim Gordon, having just captured some nut dressed like a clown as they attempted to poison the Gotham Resevoir, will endeavour to find out what drives that clown to do said crazy shit. Is the entity we know as the Joker fully formed at this stage of his existence? Or will his encounter with Gordon change him? Or will they change each other? Intriguing, to be sure, especially when the art is by Francesco Francavilla. Like I said: A must buy. (Kris)
MOUSE GUARD: OWLHEN CAREGIVER #1 $4.99 (Boom!) – Hey, Everybody? Mouse Guard is back! David Perterson brings us 3 tales in this very special one-shot. A young mouse learns that compassion is the greatest virtue there is. A brave mouse ventures into the country to learn the languages of others. And a grizzled oldfur tells a tale where they put a whisker out too far. Some fun medieval stories told with the smallest of creatures. Give it a read this New Comic Wednesday! (Andrew)
BEYOND THE BREACH #1 $4.99 (Aftershock) – Vanessa has always dreamed of visiting the old growth forests of California. What she didn’t bargain for when she finally got around to making her dream a reality, was some inter-dimensional anomaly opening up a rift in the cosmos and dumping a whole whack of extra-spatial, reality bending nightmares on top of her and her companions’ heads. What caused this Breach? And how can she, a random orphan kid she picked up in the woods, and some weird, furry creature put an end to it all? I don’t have those answers, but creators Ed Brisson and Damian Couceiro sure do. Maybe we should check out this book and see what they have to say. (Kris)
SPIDER-WOMAN #13 $3.99 (Marvel) – Spider-Woman fighting mercenaries for 22 straight pages. Sounds like my kinda comic! Jess has something the mercenaries want. She still needs it. See the problem here? Now Jess has to fight to keep it. One of those mercs Lady Bullseye, so business is about to pick up. It’s the slobberknocker of the week! Good times with the punchie-punchie! That’s what we really want from our New Comics, right? (Andrew)
ALIENS AFTERMATH #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – At the conclusion of 1986’s Aliens, Ripley, Hicks, Bishop and Newt nuked the Weyland-Yutani settlement of Hadley’s Hope with the aim of wiping the Xenomorph infestation from LV-426 once and for all. Now, in 2021, in celebration of the 35th anniversary of that classic film, we discover if they were successful. In spite of The Company’s best efforts to eliminate the record of what occurred on LV-426 from existence, a group of renegade journalists have begun to uncover the truth. With a plan of acquiring some hard evidence of Weyland-Yutani’s crimes, the reporters return to the crater that was once Hadley’s Hope. Will they find what they’re looking for? Or will “what they’re looking for” find them and make some chompy-chompy with its little mouth? My money is on the chompy-choppy. (Kris)
THE GREEN LANTERN: SEASON TWO VOL 2 HC $24.99 (DC Comics) – Grant Morrison brought us some fun, freaky, and fantastic tales in the pages of The Green Lantern: Season Two. That tends to happen when you kill off the lead character. Hal has to overcome the afterlife and be reborn for the upcoming Ultrawar. Easier said then done, kid. Witness some breathtaking artwork by Liam Sharp. The dude really kicked it up a knotch for the back half of the season. No evil escapes this collected edition. Pick it up and beware the power of Green Lantern’s light! (Andrew)
