Welcome, friends, to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Petula Neale as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot-button topics.
Back on the eighth episode of Back Issue Bloodbath, in November of 2015, Andrew and Gavin took a look at All-Star Comics, both Superman and the polarizing Batman & Robin, the Boy Wonder. Unsurprisingly, they spent most of the time talking about everything wrong with Frank Miller’s take on Bats. With the upcoming release of the new Superman movie, we thought All-Star Superman deserved a proper look. It deserves an episode all its own. It doesn’t need to share the spotlight with a controversial comic that’s all but forgotten. This is a comic that had its own animated film. It’s considered one of the best Superman comics ever written. Of course, we have to revisit this one! This week on Bloodbath, we look back on All-Star Superman.
Written by Grant Morrison with artwork by Frank Quitely, All-Star Superman reads like a love letter to the character. With a timeless feel and a larger-than-life portrayal of Big Blue, it has everything you want in a Superman story. Big Action. Deep character moments. A Kal-El with keen problem-solving skills. It’s also brimming with heart. It takes the starting point of Supes finding out that he’s going to die and delivers a journey of introspection that leads to Clark making the most of his final days. When you read it, you truly believe a man can fly.
Join Andrew and Petula as they wax nostalgic about All-Star Superman. There’s also much praise for Quitely’s artwork that’s almost busting out of the page. Give us a listen!
